“To the Central Iowa Runners of A certain age group!”

Hi Steve, this is Brian Laurenzo. I wanted to let you know that my Dad Joe Laurenzo passed away today. Would you mind letting the running group friends know for us? There will be a visitation on Sunday, September 27th at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home from 3:00-5:00 and a rosary at 5:00. The funeral will be at 10:00 on Monday, September 28th at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waukee with lunch and burial afterwards. I don’t have the contact information for the friends (Jordals, Monica, etc) who used to come to the parties at Mom and Dad’s so please tell anyone you can think of. Thanks! Best, Brian

NJ Marathon Flood Race
CBC Announcer CH: It can take months to train for a race, and then something unpredictable happens and your carefully planned strategy falls apart. That's what happened to runners in a half-marathon in Paramus, New Jersey yesterday morning. Despite heavy rain, race organizers insisted the event would go on. But as things moved forward, runners found themselves struggling to move forward. Marijana Dinic was competing in the race. We reached her in Hillsdale, New Jersey.

CBC Interviewer NK: Marijana, how far into the race were you when you saw the flooding?

MARIJANA DINIC: I believe I just finished two and a half, maybe three miles, and then came, this flood, up to my waist out of nowhere. It just showed up, yeah.

NK: Up to your waist?

MD: A little bit actually higher than my waist, yeah.

NK: I've seen some of the videos, but cars are almost submerged in some neighbourhoods. Was there water earlier in the route as well?

MD: Um, there was puddles, water was high at some areas, up to my ankles. But I thought, you know, it's pouring, it is raining, it's okay, it will get better, but it just got worse and worse.

NK: At any point, did you think I'm out? There's no need to continue this.

MD: Well, not until it was very, very strong current, then I was very frightened. I was almost in a state of panic. But at the beginning, no, I never thought I would quit because I didn't think it would continue to be so bad. Every time my mindset would shift and say it's going to be over. Okay, 50 metres, then it's gonna be better. It will get better. Okay, okay, I can do this, it will get better.

NK: You're an experienced runner. So, running in the rain might not be, after a rainstorm might not be unusual. But have you ever encountered anything close to this?

MD: Yeah. So, I ran in the rain, snow, winter, bad weather, but nothing like this. This is not just rain. This was very dangerous. Current was so strong. At one time, I had to hold myself to a rail, use all my strength of my legs. I was afraid the current would just take me down against the ground. I had to really be strong, use all my strength with my hand and my legs not to be taken down, it was bad.

NK: I saw some of the video, I saw other competitors. Were there other racers around you?

MD: Yeah. So, there were many floods up to the your waist, and not every waist flood had a current. With this current where I was, there was a guy in front of me, and then I didn't realise, I just thought it was water up to my waist, and I would just go through it like before. But this current was so strong. I look ahead of the guy, and guy looks back at me, and he's like\, wow, we are stuck here. Like, what are we gonna do? And he's like, okay, he was halfway through, and I'm like, but I still have a halfway to go. I looked behind me, no one was behind me; I was so scared. I'm like I just wanna get out of here.

NK: Yeah. But why did so many, I mean, I wonder if just everyone said, oh, obviously the race has to be called off. We should all just get out of this water and get to safety. Why did you and others keep going? What was at stake for you? What made it worth the risk?

MD: By nature, I'm not quitter, but I also didn't expect this to be so, so dangerous. Every time, I would, my mind would say, okay, it will get better. I'll go through this, then it will be better.

NK: How long did it go on for?

MD: Uh, the whole race. And towards the end, I saw that they were rerouting us, probably to avoid another waist-high water flooding. [chuckling]

NK: The end. I mean, that's interesting. We reached out to race organisers; we have not yet received a response as I speak to you now. But did they say anything to you and the other competitors? Have you heard why this race was held at all?

MD: I went to speak with the tent, the computer guys that were in charge of the numbers, the finishers, and I was showing them videos and they were shocked. I'm thinking that they did not inspect the route, or maybe it happened, I don't think, maybe they didn't know. Because when they —

NK: Should they?

MD: Oh yeah, they should have. They should have, but I feel that no one inspected the route, the 13.1 mile path. Because when I showed them videos, they were like, wow, this is where we go with our bikes. This is, wow, look at this, look at this. I'm like, didn't you inspect this before? No one did look at this? So yeah, I don't think they knew what was the danger on our way.

NK: The most important thing is that you and others were safe; you were not injured. Do you know of any others who were?

MD: I was not injured. I don't think anyone else was injured, just frightened, scared, debris, dirty water But no injuries, maybe a little bit psychological, [chuckling] but, yeah, not physical.

NK: Well, yeah. I can imagine. So, what does this mean for other races for you in the future?

MD: Well, I will take more measures and inspect, make sure that organisers do their job in the future.

NK: Marijana, thank you for this.

Your voice matters!

The Des Moines-area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) seeks public comments for projects being considered for federal funding, including replacement of the Raccoon River Bridge in Des Moines Water Works Park (photo below).

I don’t have to tell you how important this tired, rattly bridge is to the cycling, running, and walking communities. And cross-country skiers and bird-watchers, too!

Or that the bridge, built in 1932, is in sad shape.

In the most recent biennial bridge inspection (June 2025), the bridge’s substructure, deck, and railing were each scored as “poor” condition. No surprise!

But not forgotten! The Des Moines Water Works staff and Snyder and Associates are actively designing a replacement bridge to be built about 60 to 90 feet upstream from the current bridge.

Here’s what’s up next.

The City of Des Moines (applicant) seeks $900,000 from the federal Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) Set-Aside program for the bridge replacement, a project estimated to cost $4 million. (The Des Moines MPO administers this federal program.)

The committee that will recommend funding now seeks public input for this project—from interested residents like you.

Just two easy-peasy questions and a “comment” area:
First question: Select “Bill Riley Bridge” from the pull-down menu.
Question #2: Do you support the project?
Comment: Share your reasons why this project deserves funding.

Comments will be forwarded to the MPO Funding Subcommittee, which will make recommendations in October. The final funding decision is planned for November.

The survey is open through Friday, Sept. 18
