STATEMENT FROM IOWA HOUSE DEMOCRATS ON INVESTMENT IN IOWA STEEL

Statement from State Representative Dave Jacoby (D-Coralville), Ranking Member of House Ways and Means Committee:

“Today, we’re encouraged by the potential for new jobs and economic investment in Southeast Iowa, and we hope to see this project succeed and deliver its promises to Iowans.

Too many questions about this steel plant and its potential cost to Iowa taxpayers remain unanswered. We pushed to delay the vote until we all have the information needed to fully understand what Iowa taxpayers are being asked to fund. Iowans deserve to know the details before the state moves forward, and we’ll continue working to make sure it delivers for Iowa workers while protecting taxpayers.”

Statement from House Democratic Leader State Representative Brian Meyer (D-Des Moines):

“Iowans are asking us to focus on the challenges they face every day, from the rising cost of groceries and housing to higher diesel prices. If we’re coming back to the Capitol to strengthen Iowa’s economy and create jobs, we should also have taken action to lower costs for Iowans paying more for groceries, gas, housing, and healthcare.

If this investment passed today is the real deal, it has the potential to bring good-paying jobs and new economic opportunities to Iowa, but we need strong oversight and a thorough auditing process to ensure taxpayer dollars are protected.”

Two Republican senators were removed from the Ways and Means Committee today but one of those senators removed themselves and not because of the bill.

I will always be completely honest with my constituents and the media so I wanted to provide this clarification. The rest of my statement remains accurate.

When duly elected senators vote for their constituents instead of doing what the powers that be demand, they get pulled from their committees and replaced.

Today, two Republican senators were removed from Ways and Means. That’s the very committee this special-session bill must clear before it comes to the floor.

I wonder how they were planning to vote.

We saw similar games when senators voted their conscience on eminent domain.

No one is against economic development or bringing new businesses to Iowa. But lawmakers have legitimate questions, and those questions can’t always be answered in a day.

If elected officials are punished for asking questions and representing their constituents, is that democracy?

These political games should concern every Iowan.
