Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Thursday that the electric vehicle giant has cut the memory specifications on its next-generation Optimus robot chips to scale production, after Micron Technology said humanoid robots could require hundreds of gigabytes of memory and storage.

In a post on X, Musk said Tesla cut the AI5 chip’s memory in half to 72GB and the AI6 chip’s memory by a third to 144GB, calling it “the only way to get enough volume for Optimus production,” which “greatly” reduces cost.

He added that the cuts should have a “negligible effect on Optimus performance,” as memory bandwidth is a bigger limiting factor than total memory capacity.

Musk was responding to an X user who cited the billionaire’s prediction that AI may eventually exceed the sum of human intelligence to argue that humanoid robots would outnumber people.

In a bold move reflecting the current economic climate, President Donald Trump is keeping the option of a diesel export ban open as diesel prices soar to an unprecedented $6.53 per gallon. This decision comes amidst the rising cost of gasoline, which could potentially climb even higher.

The intention behind the potential ban is to stabilize domestic fuel prices and ensure adequate supply within the U.S. market. However, this approach has sparked a mix of reactions from industry experts and consumers alike. On one hand, some support the idea as a necessary measure to curb further price hikes for American drivers. On the other, critics argue it could disrupt international trade and strain relationships with key trade partners. As the situation unfolds, the White House is closely monitoring the energy market dynamics and weighing the implications of such a policy.

Meanwhile, U.S. citizens are advised to stay informed on these developments as they could have direct impacts on their daily expenses and broader economic conditions.
