Now that I’m back from EJS, I’m all amped up and couldn’t help busting this thing out on the first half ass decent day here in Michigan. For all the super capable, super modified, over the top rigs I’ve been lucky enough to design and wheel over the past 12 years, I do still love me a dorky bone stock TJ. 🤓

For last nights episode of 7 minute speed sketching with my Visom class, I looked up lists of famously “ugly cars”.
Now, obviously the term ugly is subjective as I happen to like a few of the cars that made the top 10 list that we were referencing last night, but regardless, it was a fun challenge to have the students have to redesign cars that at the very least have very polarizing designs.
Again, I couldn’t help myself from sketching along side them. Not all of them are successful, which is almost always the case when you only have a few minutes to rethink an entire design, but there was some great ideas throughout the class. For as long as I’ve been doing this, it still surprises me how much good content can come out of these speed sketching exercises. Even some of the students who struggle with perspective and other basic viscom rules are in some cases more successful with these exercises because they don’t overthink it, and when you let everything else go and just try and get your ideas done on paper, sometimes you surprise yourself with what you come up with. (it goes without saying that sometimes you end up with straight up garbage, but that’s all part of the process!🥴🤣)

Gucci + American Motors… seems legit.

Every so often I come across stuff on marketplace that gives me pause. It might be a car with interesting design potential, or a trim line I didn’t know about. I came across this one locally last year and it checked both boxes. A strange bird to begin with, this 72 hornet wagon has an over the top Gucci designed interior, which I’d leave entirely alone in all its 70’s glory.
On the exterior, some nipping and tucking would be required to reign in some of the proportional oddness. First things first, I’d cut and stitch the wheel wells back together 2” higher on the body and recenter the axles…(a fancy way of saying I’d channel it). To jazz up the hood, I’d add hood features from a 1968 barracuda. The bumpers could afford to be tucked in a little bit, but otherwise the body is in pretty good shape. A hotted up 401 under the hood, 18 inch forged lines on meaty red line tires you’re ready to get your groceries… In style!
