Happy summer! Today marks the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere — the first day of astronomical summer.

At the summer solstice, Earth’s North Pole is tilted most toward the Sun. That tilt gives the Northern Hemisphere its longest stretch of daylight, while the Southern Hemisphere experiences its winter solstice and least amount of daylight.

Mi-Sci is a Blue Star Museum! Beginning on Armed Forces Day and ending on Labor Day, we are pleased to offer free admission to active-duty military and their family. Simply present your military or dependent identification card at the box office.

Mercury is usually difficult to spot because it stays close to the Sun in our sky, but tonight offers a good chance. Look for Mercury low in the western sky shortly after sunset. Mercury appears farthest from the Sun in the evening sky, making this a good time to view the closest planet to the Sun.

Stargaze in the Penske Planetarium with 3 shows this month. What’s Up: Your Guide to the Night’s Sky is a live narrated show that changes throughout the seasons and gives you clear look at Detroit skies as it appears now.

Bringing little ones? A visit to Mi-Sci isn’t complete without a stop to Kids Town! This space is specially designed for kiddos ages 5 and under.

Kids ages 7 to 9 can build confidence and safety on two wheels at Bicycle Safety Town on June 28.

Mi-Sci is partnering with Major Taylor Michigan Cycling Advocacy to bring a hands-on bike safety experience to the Lower Atrium. Young riders will learn proper helmet fitting and the ABC Quick Check, hand signals and rules of the road. Then, they’ll practice navigating roads safely in a simulated street environment.
