Why shouldn’t kids cook their own lunch at school?

One of our 7th graders wanted filet mignon for lunch, so she brought one to school and cooked it herself.

And we’re here for it.

At Waypoint, we want kids learning real-life skills and actually having the freedom to use them. Cooking, problem-solving, making decisions, trying new things and becoming more independent along the way.

Because capable kids become capable adults.

And apparently, they eat pretty well too.

Life skills AI can’t replace. That’s a big part of what we teach at Waypoint.

After about two focused hours of core academics, our students have the rest of their school day to get outside and actually practice them.

They grow food and learn how to turn it into a business. They work with local businesses and interview business owners. They practice public speaking and learn to communicate their ideas. They build, test, problem solve, and figure out what to do when the first plan doesn’t work. They learn survival skills and then head out on trips where they have to put those skills to use.

That’s where confidence is built. Leadership is practiced. Resilience is tested. And kids learn how to work with others, make decisions, and figure things out for themselves.

AI will be part of our kids’ future. We believe these skills need to be, too.

So yes, we use AI to teach academics efficiently. Then we use our outdoor campus to teach the life skills AI can’t replace.

During our Robin Hood workshop, students are learning archery, but hitting the target is only part of it.

They’re practicing focus, patience, coordination, perseverance, and the confidence that comes from learning a skill that might not come easily the first time.

That’s a big part of what we believe at Waypoint. Kids need opportunities to try new things, challenge themselves, get outside, and learn through experiences they’ll actually remember.
