Studio Notes: Spreading Hope and Joy

The palette began with colors that did not make sense together yet.

Some were too bright on their own. Some needed another color beside them before they could hold their place.

As the painting developed, the color moved farther from the wings.

From a distance, you may see the butterfly first.

Up close, the color begins to lead.

Some paintings make you stop.

Not because of what they show you.

Because of what they make you remember.

In The Helping Hand, Emily Renouf painted a little girl rowing a boat with an old fisherman.

But look closely.

The boat did not need her.

He could have done it himself.

Still, he gave her the oar.

For a moment, she gets to feel the weight of the work.

She gets to feel useful.

She gets to feel that her little hands can do something real.

And the old man?

He is quietly carrying the boat while letting her believe in her own strength.

There is something about that tenderness that stays with me.

The feeling of being taken seriously.

Of someone saying yes when your hands are eager to help.

Maybe that is why we go to museums and forget to leave.

Not because we understand every painting.

But because, sometimes, a painting gives us a feeling we had forgotten.

What painting has made you stop and stay longer than you expected?

I thought I was making art.

I was becoming.

This space has become sacred enough to let me lead.

I still do not know how I arrived here.

I only know that I can feel the change.

In the way I see.

In the way I think.

In the ideas that arrive.

In the vision that keeps opening before me.

It is no longer only about the painting.

Or what I do with my hands.

Or even the finished work.

Something in me finally senses freedom.

I do not have the right words for it yet.

The studio was no longer just a room with canvases leaning against the walls, brushes stiffening in jars, and traces of pigment ground into the floor.

It became a place where I met myself without distraction.

A place where I could see my impatience in a hurried mark, my fear in the moments I refused to leave a surface alone, and my trust in the spaces where I allowed the painting to remain unresolved.

That is when I understood:

I was not only making paintings.

I was being changed by the act of returning to them.

This is my path.

I am no longer simply someone who paints.

I am becoming an artist—not because I have made enough work to claim the title, but because the practice has begun to shape the way I live, notice, endure, and respond.

The work follows me beyond the studio.

It changes how I look at a face across a room, how I notice weather moving through trees, how I sit with uncertainty instead of covering it too quickly.

And I am taking this space more seriously than ever.

Not because I have something to prove.

But because I finally understand what it holds for me.

Something sacred.

Something demanding.

Something I can no longer enter casually or take for granted.

I am here differently now.

With more presence.

More devotion.

More respect for the work.

The process.

The silence.

The unfinished canvas.

And the person I am becoming each time I return.

I thought I was making art.

But the longer I stayed, the more clearly I could see the truth:

I was becoming.

The door is open.

For the past six months, I’ve been quietly creating something very close to me.

Becoming: The Power of Becoming

Seventeen original works.

One continuing story.

For the first time, I’m opening the world behind the work.

The stories.
The moments.
The meanings.
The pieces of a journey that found their way into color.

This is not simply a collection to look at.

It is a space to enter.

To take your time.

To perhaps recognize something of your own along the way.

The private preview is now open through September 30.

If you have been part of my journey, this invitation is for you.
