⚡ Did you know that an electric vehicle has a much simpler mechanical architecture than a traditional combustion vehicle?
A traditional engine requires many components to convert combustion into motion.
An EV uses a much simpler system:
🔋 Battery - ⚡ Power Electronics - 🔄 Electric Motor - 🚗 Wheels

That doesn't mean automotive parts are disappearing.
They're changing.

As demand decreases for some traditional components, demand increases for:
🔋 Batteries
⚡ Power Electronics
🧠 Sensors
🔌 Charging Components
🌡️ Thermal Systems

The EV transition is creating a new automotive supply chain.

lectric vehicles aren't just changing how we move. They're changing what the automotive industry needs to move.
EVs require a different architecture:

🔋 Battery Systems
⚡ Power Electronics
🧠 Sensors & Software
🌡️ Thermal Management
🔌 Charging Systems
And behind these components are new raw materials, new suppliers and new manufacturing facilities.

The EV transition doesn't mean automotive logistics is disappearing.
It means the things we need to move are changing.

In 2025, the U.S. sold approximately 1.5 million electric vehicles, representing close to 10% of new vehicle sales.
They're still not the majority.

But they're already large enough to transform the supply chain.

🚛 What do you do when a part is keeping a truck out of service?

Start by identifying which components can actually stop an operation.

Then ask:
📍 Where is the part available?
⏱️ How long will it take to arrive?
🚚 Which transportation option can reduce the waiting time?

Not every part requires the same level of urgency.
📦 LTL → when it can wait.
🚛 FTL → when you need more capacity.
🚐 Sprinter Van → when the vehicle is down and every hour matters.

The decision shouldn't be based only on the cost of moving the part.
You also need to consider the cost of keeping the vehicle down.

🚛 A truck isn't just a vehicle. For a business, it's a revenue-generating asset.
That's why fleet operators focus heavily on one important concept "Fleet Uptime".

Fleet uptime means maximizing the amount of time a vehicle is available and working, while minimizing downtime.

A repair, a failure, or even an unavailable part can take a vehicle out of service.
And the impact goes beyond the cost of the part.

It can affect:
⏱️ Time
💰 Revenue
📦 Deliveries
👷 Operations
🚛 Fleet productivity

In 2025, 212,707 new Class 8 trucks were sold in the U.S.
Behind every one of them is an ongoing need for maintenance, repairs and replacement parts.

🔧 OEM vs Aftermarket. ¿Son realmente lo mismo?
No necesariamente.

🔧 OEM vs. Aftermarket. Are they really the same thing?
Not necessarily.

An OEM part is associated with the vehicle's original manufacturer or a supplier producing the part to the manufacturer's specifications.
An Aftermarket part is produced by another company to perform the same function and fit the vehicle.

But here's the interesting part:
👉 A company can operate in both markets.

Global component suppliers can manufacture parts for OEMs while also supplying the aftermarket.

So OEM vs. Aftermarket doesn't always mean “original vs. generic.”
It can also mean two different channels within the automotive supply chain.

🔧 Why are there so many different parts available for the same vehicle?
The answer is a massive industry: the automotive aftermarket.

And aftermarket is much more than parts manufacturers.

It includes:
🏭 Manufacturers
📦 Importers
🚚 Distributors
🏪 Auto Parts Stores
🔧 Repair Shops
🛒 E-commerce
⚙️ Specialty & Performance Parts

In the aftermarket, having the right part available can be just as important as the price.
A part may sit in a distribution center, move through LTL or FTL, or even require dedicated transportation to reach a repair shop quickly.

And we're talking about a massive market:

The U.S. light-vehicle aftermarket reached approximately $413.7 billion in 2024.

🚗 OEM, Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3…

🚗 OEM, Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3… what do they actually mean?

If you work in the automotive industry, you've probably heard these terms before.

The OEM manufactures the vehicle.
Tier 1 suppliers sell directly to the OEM.
Tier 2 suppliers provide components to Tier 1.
And Tier 3 suppliers are further upstream, often providing basic components or raw materials.

But here's the important part:
👉 Each level can have very different inventory, production and transportation needs.
Understanding where a company sits in the supply chain can also help explain how its products need to move.

🚗 México no solo fabrica vehículos.

📍 ¿A dónde necesitan llegar?

🚗 Mexico doesn't just manufacture vehicles. It is moving a major part of North America's automotive supply chain.
In 2025, Mexico produced approximately $119 billion in auto parts and exported more than $103 billion.

But here's an even more interesting number:

43.74% of the auto parts imported by the U.S. came from Mexico.
When analyzing an automotive supply chain, it's not enough to know where the vehicle is assembled.

You also need to understand:
📍 Where are the suppliers?
📍 Where are the parts manufactured?
📍 Which border crossing do they use?
📍 Where do those parts need to go?

An auto part can travel hundreds or even thousands of miles before becoming part of a vehicle.
That's where logistics becomes part of the strategy.

🏢 Is a warehouse the same as a Distribution Center?

Although many people use these terms interchangeably, they serve very different purposes.
A warehouse is primarily designed to store inventory.
A Distribution Center keeps products moving by receiving freight, processing orders, consolidating shipments, and coordinating deliveries as efficiently as possible.
Fast delivery doesn't depend only on transportation—it also depends on a smart distribution strategy.

💬 Question of the week:
If you could improve one area of your logistics operation, what would you prioritize?
📦 Faster deliveries
📊 Better inventory visibility
🚚 More efficient transportation
💰 Lower logistics costs

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

🏭📦 Every product has a destination... but most make one final stop first: a Distribution Center.

This episode closes the first season of ABGL Logistics Intelligence, where we've explored how the U.S. electronics supply chain works.
After traveling across oceans, borders, and highways, most electronic products arrive at a Distribution Center, where they're received, sorted, stored, and prepared for final delivery.

📊 The numbers tell the story:
Texas has more than 2 billion square feet of industrial space, while California exceeds 1 billion, making them two of the largest logistics markets in the United States.
Today, a Distribution Center is far more than a warehouse—it's a strategic hub that helps reduce lead times, optimize inventory, and keep products moving closer to the customer.
