That's a wrap on the Ice Dam Series. 🎬❄️

Thirteen episodes. What causes ice dams, what damage they cause, how to manage them, and every heat cable option in between. If you missed any of it, the whole series is right here on our page — go back through it.

So where does that leave you? Our answer, and the solution we're proudest of, is Helmet Heat: Gutter Helmet with heat cable integrated right into it. You never clean your gutters again, and you're mitigating ice dams at the same time — one system doing both jobs. It's 25%+ more energy efficient, the cable is fully protected under the helmet instead of exposed on your roof, and it adds real strength to your gutter system under snow load. We're the exclusive dealer for it in this region, and we'd love to come take a look at your home and talk through what makes sense for you.

Thanks for following along with the series. It's fixable — don't wait for your own ice dam story.

After a long week of training in St. Louis and Nashville, I was blessed to be able to watch my alma mater Alabama play Mississippi State and Starkville, Mississippi. They have a fun tradition surrounding their cowbells where they play this old SNL skit regarding a OLD Blue Öyster Cult song that features cowbells too fun. I love college football season! 🏈

Don't touch that switch. ❄️

Almost a decade into doing this, and Bob gets asked the same question constantly: should I turn my heat tape on and off, watch it, babysit it? Episode 12 is his answer, and it's a strong one.

Turn your system on for the winter and leave it on. Don't micromanage it. Here's why: if you shut it off because things look fine, you've cleared a path for water to reach the edge of your roof — right where your heating system ends. Turn it off there, and the water keeps running down, past where the heat used to protect it, and refreezes higher up the roof than before. Now the dam has moved above your heating solution entirely, and turning the system back on can't help it anymore. You've actually made the problem worse and moved it closer to your living space. Heat sensors and moisture sensors don't fix this either — we've found they just don't work consistently. You can't outsmart Mother Nature.

Turn it on. Leave it on. Enjoy the winter.

The magic is in the prep work 🔧✨

Brad and Christie's garage in Pagosa Springs had pitting that needed extensive repairs before coating. Robert and Justice repaired every inch of that floor before applying Penntek's polyurea coating in Pecan. A huge thank you to Brad and Christie for their patience through the process, and to Robert and Justice for the hard work and craftsmanship they poured into every step of this one! 💪❤️

We promised you the reasons. Here they are. ❄️

Back in Episode 9, Bob told you Helmet Heat was our favorite ice dam solution and said there was more to explain later. Episode 11 is that explanation — why we believe it's the clear winner.

Helmet Heat is gutter helmet (so you never clean your gutters again) with heat cable integrated right into it — one cable in the bottom of the gutter, one under the nose of the helmet, warming the panel so water gets to the ground before it ever has a chance to refreeze. It's also just more efficient: Helmet Heat uses about 40% less cable than serpentine, which takes roughly four times the linear length to do the same job — that's 25%+ more energy efficient, right there. The aluminum gutter helmet bracket adds real strength to your gutter system under snow load and ice, and it protects the cable from UV at the same time. It looks better on your roof, too, than cable zig-zagged across your shingles.

We've installed this all over southwestern Colorado for 10 years. And if something ever comes up, we don't ghost people — our team shows up and handles it.

That's the whole case. It just works.

New build. Finished the right way. ✨

Jay, a local builder right here in Durango, brought us in to coat this brand-new garage with Penntek's polyurea coating in Silver Creek. Thank you, Jay, for keeping it local, and thank you Robert and Justice for the outstanding craftsmanship! ❤️💪

Not all heat cable is safe to put on a roof. This one, we won't install. ❄️

Ten episodes in — today Bob pulls back the curtain on the two heat tape products on the market, and why the difference matters more than people think.

Big box store heat tape runs constant — same electricity draw whether it's freezing or not, well over 100 degrees, with flimsy clips and zero heat regulation. If it overlaps on itself, it can short out and cause a dry fire. It's just not built for southwestern Colorado winters, and honestly, we won't install it. Not a safe product, full stop.

What we use instead: self-regulating heat cable. It's ambient — the colder it gets outside, the more energy it draws; the warmer it gets, the less it uses. It's custom cut on-site to your exact roofline so there's no wasted product and no leftover tape you don't know what to do with. Heavy-duty clips, more surface area, proven performance — we've installed over 30 miles of it since 2017, available in 120V or 240V.

Cheap and dangerous, or engineered and safe. That's really the choice.
