Take a walk through 140 years of haunted history in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. GHOST WALK DURANGO is a guided walking tour starting at the Old Durango High School (201 East 12th Street) through the historic district of Durango, Colorado. Durango was founded officially in 1880 to serve the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad following an unsuccessful negotiation with the existing settlement of Animas City 2 miles North. Gun battles, including the Stockton Gang and the Simmons Gang feud, lynchings, a fire in 1889 that consumed most of the wooden buildings and sidewalks in town, the Spanish Flu epidemic, and a general reckless 'Devil May Care' element that was omnipresent in the early days have all contributed to countless ghost and haunting stories. For the first 40 years of Durango's existence, no sane person left their home without a pistol. For farmers, ranchers and business people alike a lever action r***e or double barrel sh***un was strapped to a plow, in a saddle scabbard, or propped against a desk more often than not. All stories you will hear have been researched and well documented, and may have been experienced by your guide personally. Folklore and legends have been carefully preserved from generations of local storytellers. As educational as it is fun, GHOST WALK DURANGO is one of Durango's most popular attractions and a sure bet for fun and thrills. If a time or date isn't listed on our booking site please contact us, we may be able to accomodate your request. Perfect for couples and kids from 1-101. Tickets $15

Jack Dempsey and Max Baer. Neither future world heavyweight champions were born in Durango, both lived some formative years here. Mr Dempsey worked in the City Coal mine in Goeglein Gluch, Mr Baer worked with his father Jacob Baer at Graden meat packing plant at 777 Main St.
I've never worked in a coal mine, but I have worked in a meat packing plant and I have trained and sparred in full contact fighting sports. I can't imagine how tough these guys had to be to do the latter after a 14 hour shift in the former.

In Durango's early days, sawn lumber was a premium. Moving buildings in the 1880's was a remarkably common and labor-intensive practice. It was often far more economical to move an entire existing structure—from small log cabins to massive Victorian mansions—rather than building a new one.

In 1991, the Durango grid was often called the "college ghetto" due to the rentals and the state of the properties.
Things couldn't be more unlike a "ghetto" after 35 years of near constant renovations. Thankfully the Victorian character is very much intact. So are the ghosts! Want to find out more?

This unit had men posted at Fort Lewis. When they got involved with the Stockton gang situation things rapidly came to a head. Ghostly echoes of an incident are reportedly still being heard.
