Open the Maria's Bookshop outdoor area with me!! πŸŒ„

Every summer, we put out a beautiful bump-out in front of our store! It features tables, benches, flowers, vegetables, and a piano provided by Durango Street Pianos! 🌻🎼

We love it when people gather in this space, as we are proud to provided a relaxing area for people to enjoy the outdoors. We will be packing up this area in the near future to prepare for winter, so make sure to stop by soon!!

Meet Dahlia! We are very excited to have her joining us at Maria's Bookshop as a bookseller!! She has worked with Maria's Literary Foundation for just over a year and has also recently taken on the role of Programs Coordinator at the Foundation.

Dahlia has a particular interest in environmental literature, so if you need suggestions (or you love beavers and want to hop on the Beaver Bandwagon 🦫), Dahlia is the person to talk to!!

Summer in the City of Durango saw a refresh of our storefront with a crisp new awning and fresh paint on the windows! Even our Maria's Bookshop waterbird got a touch-up, all thanks to Donny with Bare Wood Fine Finishing and the City of Durango's Re:New Grant.

The Re:New Grant is a City of Durango program that provides matching funds to downtown and neighborhood commercial district businesses for exterior storefront improvements. The goal is to support private investment in visible upgrades that strengthen the character and vitality of Durango's commercial corridors. It provides a dollar-for-dollar match up to $5,000 for projects that are visible from the public right-of-way.

But our Summer Glow Up didn't end there! What you don't see are the rooftop solar panels and upgrades to our power. Through the Durango Impact & Resiliency Grant, funded by the lodgers' tax, we now have 19.575kW of rooftop solar capacity in total, producing about 31,000 kWh of energy annually. And that energy is preventing over 25,000 lbs of CO2 emissions a year! Connected to our solar panels is a battery and expansion pack that provides 27 kWh of energy storage capacity which proved vital during that unexpected outage throughout Durango back in June.

Many thanks to the teams at Shaw Solar , LPEA and especially to the City of Durango for grant programs encouraging community-driven efforts that enhance resilience, advance sustainability goals, and strengthen Durango and La Plata County as a socially and environmentally responsible place to live and visit.
