This year's Girl Scouts STEM Day at Duke University welcomed 150 students and more than 100 volunteers from 70 organizations (including Biogen and Fujifilm Global Biotech) for its ninth consecutive year. 🌟

The free event, organized by in partnership with Triangle Women in STEM and Girl Scouts North Carolina Coastal Pines, introduces middle and high school students to careers in science, technology, engineering and math through hands-on workshops.

"I was always taught by my mom that I don’t have to be one thing,” said program alum Promise Henry, now studying chemistry on a pre-med track at Howard University. “I want to be a pediatrician, but I also have a strong passion for science. This program really sparked my interest that I can work in different fields without only having to be a doctor.”

Between solving mysteries in deep space to running a restaurant in a cozy village, the first-ever spring Demo Day hosted by Duke University's Master in Game Development, Design & Innovation (GDDI) had something for every player to enjoy. The event also marked the next chapter for the program's first graduating class.

“The transition feels less like stepping out of school and more like moving from one studio to another,” said Benjamin Blas MEng '26. “We didn’t enter the job market feeling like students. We entered it already thinking and working like developers.”

Congratulations to Claire Andreasen BSE '26 on earning a Fulbright grant! 👏

Claire will spend the year at EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland studying redox-flow batteries.

"Professionally, I believe that energy security is a global challenge that will require international collaboration, and I hope to contribute to building the partnerships needed to address it."

Fulbright Association | Duke University

Led by a partnership between Durham Public Schools and , the first annual Innovation for Humanity Expo invited 14 teams of students from four local middle schools to Duke University to compete in STEM-based activities connected to real-world issues.

“I believe our students left this experience with a different sense of what they are capable of,” said Darian Harris, director of career and technical education for Durham Public Schools. “Events like Innovation for Humanity expand what students believe is possible, and I think our students and teachers felt that.”

Before Roarke Horstmeyer joined as a faculty member, he was a Duke University undergraduate studying physics and Japanese after spending a gap year immersed in rural Japan.

"I really enjoyed learning the language and living there, so when I arrived at Duke I wanted to continue studying it and stay proficient."

After graduate school in California and a postdoc in Germany, Horstmeyer returned to Duke to develop microscopes and imaging software to improve patient care from pathology reports to surgical procedures.

"When you look through a microscope, you can only see a very small area at once. Our goal is to help researchers and clinicians see much more—larger areas, in three dimensions, or across multiple colors—without sacrificing detail."

What excites him most is collaborating with biologists and clinicians to tackle real-world challenges.

"I get to learn about fascinating problems from people with completely different expertise, then think about how optics, imaging and algorithms can help solve them."

➡️ His advice for students:

"It's important to think holistically about both the problems you want to solve throughout your career and the ways you want to solve them. If you can find that intersection—where meaningful work aligns with what you genuinely enjoy doing—that's the ideal."

Duke University has announced a new Systems Engineering master's program for engineering professionals looking to design complex, multidisciplinary systems in their field with an emphasis on intelligent and autonomous systems.

With a flexible 24-month online option and both standard and accelerated on-campus paths, students can tailor their studies to specialized industry tracks, choosing from electives within or a Space Systems track offered in collaboration with the Duke SPACE Initiative.
