Not every Jewelsmith piece starts with precious metal.

Phil's creativity extends to more than precious metals and gemstones. Here he's carving ethically sourced ebony wood into a beautiful pendant with warm contrasting gold leaf accents and an Akoya pearl.

In addition to various types of wood, we have also created jewelry with many other alternative materials such as niobium, titanium, stainless steel, neoprene and more!

If you have an idea for a custom project using alternative materials, make your appointment with our designers for a free design consultation.

August babies, let's talk about your birthstone. 🍋‍🟩

Peridot is one of the rare gems that's naturally this vibrant green. Gemologist Tracy is showing off a pair of peridot stud earrings from our collection, plus some loose gems including a beautiful pillow-cut pair by North Carolina lapidary Clay Zava.

Quick poll: would you wear peridot as 1️⃣ earrings, 2️⃣ a pendant, or 3️⃣ a statement ring? (At 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale, it's happiest in the first two, but we want to hear your take.)

Drop your number below. 👇

Celebrating a huge milestone! 🏆

Our gemologist Katherine just received her certificate from the American Gem Society honoring her 20 years as a Certified Gemologist Appraiser! That's the highest level of certification for gemologists and has to be renewed every year.

From Katherine, "I feel proud of the body of knowledge I’ve learned to help people understand the value of their collections. I love seeing the blend of family collections in addition to the brand new creations we make at Jewelsmith."

22 years ago, Katherine came to Jewelsmith as a graduate gemologist. Right away she started working to become a certified gemologist appraiser.

"I’d forgotten it had been 20 years. It went by so fast. Jewelsmith is a dream come true for a CGA. It's such a creative and collaborative place and I see such a wide variety of gems and diamonds here."

Any advice to aspiring gemologists? She says, "I would encourage to start working in a jewelry store first. If they still love it after a year or two, go for it."

And to all of our wonderful customers, "Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your jewelry collections over these past 20 years."

Lab Grown or Earth Grown? 🤔

One of the most common questions our gemologists get is, "How can you tell the difference between lab grown and natural diamonds?"

Katherine explains one of the ways an experienced gemologist can use strain patterns for identification. Both of our gemologists have had specific training in this method. In addition, we use an approved lab diamond screening device called Sherlock Holmes 4.0.

At Jewelsmith, all the gemstones we stock whether loose or set in jewelry were created by the earth, but we're happy to source lab grown diamonds for your special custom piece.

Her Mother's Diamonds, Reborn 💍

She walked in with two sets of diamonds: her own, and her mother's. She walked out with one ring that holds them both.

Tiffany and Denis reimagined the gemstones into a vintage-inspired rose gold setting, an oval diamond center flanked by rounds, smaller diamonds tracing down each side, and Denis's milgrain detail outlining every edge.

The verdict? Two "oh wows." Two "oh my goodnesses." We're calling that a win. 😄

Jewelry care tips for the summer. ☀️

Our designer Mary is here to share some helpful tips to keep your jewelry safe and shining this summer.

While an occasional dip in a chlorinated pool is OK, prolonged exposure to chlorine can dissolve the metals that are mixed with pure gold to make the different karats like 10K, 14K, 18K etc. When those other metals are gone, they leave a spongy lattice of the pure gold that is brittle and prone to cracking. The concentration of the chlorine makes a difference, too. Chlorine bleach cleaners, for example, can have this effect even faster than pools and hot tubs.

At the beach, if your jewelry slips off while you're enjoying the waves, it can be very hard to find it. Also, over time, the saltwater can cause the steel springs in some types of clasps such as lobster claws and spring rings to corrode and fail. This is not something that happens immediately, and again, a dip in the ocean every once in a while, won't cause a catastrophic failure. But if you spend a lot of time in seawater, it's something to think about.

Check out the link in our bio to learn more about how chlorine affects your jewelry in our blog article. It contains detailed information about how this happens, how it affects your jewelry, what types of jewelry are most vulnerable and how to prevent it. 🔗
