Stay cool, Durham!
08/04/2026
Hey, Durham! It’s Too Cool Tuesday, and we are back with another practical tip to help you stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe during Durham’s hottest months.
You will be told to “stay hydrated,” this summer likely more times that you can count. Staying hydrated is more than just drinking water. It is an intentional act of giving your body enough water to avoid dehydration which can be dangerous.
High temperatures can increase your risk of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and other heat-related illnesses. Drinking enough water helps your body regulate temperature and stay healthy.
Remember to drink water regularly throughout the day, especially if you’re spending time outdoors, working in the heat, or engaging in physical activity. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty; by then your body may already be dehydrated.
Other tips on how to prevent heat-related illness can be found or to sign up for heat alerts can be found here:

Hey Durham, It's Too Cool Tuesday!
Did you know that some medications can raise your risk of heat‑related illness?
Certain medications can interact with the heat, leading to potentially serious side effects. For example, some medications do not mix well with heat, making it harder for your body to stay cool. Which is super convenient during a heat wave, right?
Some of the most common drugs can make the heat harder to handle. Do you research and speak with a medical professional if you believe your medication could be dangerous on hot days.
Other tips on how to prevent heat-related illness can be found or to sign up for heat alerts can be found on the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Division of Public Health Extreme Heat webpage
