86% of US organizations can't find qualified wireless engineers. Meanwhile, the networks those engineers need to run are getting more complex, not less.

According to Cisco's State of Wireless 2026 report, nearly 98% of IT leaders say wireless operations are becoming more complex even as the teams responsible for them are getting smaller. Unpopular opinion: your roaming problems aren't the AP's fault.

Most roaming complaints get diagnosed as "AP issue" and fixed with configuration changes. But in 802.11, the client decides when to roam , not the AP. APs can suggest through BSS Transition Management (802.11v), but a sticky client ignores it.

The real culprits: client power save aggressiveness, driver behavior, legacy supplicants, and in some cases just a bad NIC. None of that shows on the dashboard.

The engineers who solve roaming problems fast understand the full handshake , association, authentication, BSS transition, and what each client is actually doing in the air. That's 802.11 protocol knowledge, not vendor config knowledge.

Your engineers certified on one vendor. Your clients running three.
