Stories that should be told. Stories that should be heard.
There were several takeaways from this past Saturday's NABJ-Raleigh Durham General Body Meeting. Our chapter heard a powerful presentation from mental health therapist and documentarian Frederick Murphy about the importance of utilizing film to capture the experiences of those who've been impacted by racial injustice. Hearing these stories reminded us of the trauma people don’t often talk about...trauma often carried for centuries and generations. One of the most thought-provoking moments, other than viewing powerful clips from his documentaries, was seeing a used K*K robe. The robe had blood splatter on it and the initials of the supposed owner inside the robe's hood. It was definitely a moment to pause. It's important, especially in mental health studies, to recognize that terror and trauma didn't just happen in the past, but the effects are still being felt by many today. 📸 Mathias Bishop and Marie Torres

Happy Juneteenth!

Juneteenth reminds us that freedom delayed is freedom denied. In 1863, the truth of emancipation was withheld from people who had every right to know they were free. Today, attacks on the free press threaten that same fundamental principle: the public’s right to know.

A free press is essential to freedom. It allows us to document our stories, defend the truth, challenge injustice and hold power accountable.

This Juneteenth, NABJ honors the legacy of those who fought for liberation and reaffirms our commitment to protecting the journalists who continue to carry truth forward.

NABJ-Raleigh Durham was pleased to hear some of the great efforts underway right now to support HBCUs during April's General Body Meeting. A special thank you to our speaker Dr. Shandra Jones with Self-Help Credit Union. She highlighted the important work she does with the HBCU Promise+ Center of Excellence. The center's holistic approach showed a deep level of care, commitment, and investment to HBCUs as well as the communities that surround them.

We also heard a recap of the NABJ Region III conference held in Montgomery, Alabama which included a talk from Bryan Stevenson, Founder and Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative and a visit to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice.

It’s Thursday, and we’re throwing it back to last weekend! We met at Raleigh Union Station for our general body meeting. Troy Creasy, Branch Manager of Design and Construction at North Carolina Department of Transportation - Rail Division, gave an engaging and informative talk about the impact rail travel has on our state — from connecting communities to driving economic growth.
