Ready to take a swing at golf?

The Get Golf Ready Program at the Duke University Golf Club gives beginners a fun, low-pressure introduction to the game. Across five sessions, participants learn putting, chipping, bunker play, full swings, golf etiquette and the basics of playing on the course.

The program is offered multiple times each year, including an upcoming session in August, with discounted pricing for Duke staff and faculty and retirees. Clubs are available for participants who need them.

After completing Get Golf Ready, participants can continue building their skills by joining the Get Golf Ready League. The league meets once a week during the golf season for nine holes and offers a reduced playing rate for the league round. A small league fee also helps fund prizes awarded at the end of the season.

Devlin, the flat, cut-out companion who serves as a Working@Duke Correspondent, arrived at the Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVI) Research Triangle Park campus during a busy week when there’s little pause between experiments and deadlines.

Even so, the DHVI team made space for him.

With biosafety restrictions limiting access to active lab areas, Devlin took in the campus from the edges. He lingered in shared spaces, posed near a sweeping spiral stairwell and paused by window ledges lined with plants that soften the clinical feel of the workday. He even climbed aboard a piece of lab equipment — currently out of order — for a quick photo.

“He had the opportunity to visit our lab space during an especially busy workweek, which gave him a glimpse into our daily operations,” said Ambrosia Garcia, EQAPOL Director of Laboratory Operations, Associate Director for Immunology and Virology Operations. “Access to most active lab areas was limited, however, he enjoyed posing in several of our communal spaces and engaging with the team.”

For staff, the visit offered a small shift in perspective, a chance to notice the details that often blur into routine. For Devlin, it was another stop in his tour of the places and people behind Duke’s work.

Eric Buie, a Laboratory Preparator for the Duke Anatomical Gifts Program, didn’t realize his day was going to be so lucky when he popped into Penn Pavilion for the Duke Employee Appreciation Reception in May.

Eric Ferreri, a Senior Writer at Duke Communications, Marketing, and Public Affairs, went on the trip of a lifetime to Australia this summer with his family on his Duke time off.

“Natural beauty everywhere you look, tons of wildlife, and we found Nemo at the Great Barrier Reef,” Eric said.
