What ended as a great weekend and wonderful competition at EI Horse Trials the end of August quickly morphed into a serious situation. The following morning Romeo was noticeably in distress prompting an immediate trip to Idaho Equine Hospital. He was experiencing a serious impaction colic. It took over two days, lots of fluids, and close monitoring until he was finally able to pass the fluids and blockage. He was doing great, vitals wonderful, but then promptly went into aFib and suffered an “equine heart insult”. Vets and techs went into immediate action and were able to get his heart back into a normal rhythm within a relatively short period of time but leaving concerns about any heart damage. He was kept several more days for observation and additional testing. With vitals back to normal and a clear ultrasound of the heart he was able to come home on “rest” for three weeks. He had his recheck last week passing with flying colors with “excellent”heart enzymes! What could have ended very differently instead resulted in the best way possible. He has started back on a careful reconditioning and is his happy, exuberant, full of personality self! I can’t say enough about how incredibly wonderful the staff at Idaho Equine was throughout the entire ordeal. Very special thanks to Dr Liz Scott and her fabulous techs! I am truly blessed to still have my precious Romeo and the opportunity to ride another day. Be sure to thank your vets and hug your horse. ❤️
