Why your cardiologist prescribed a statin.
Pravastatin lowers LDL cholesterol by slowing how much your liver makes. Lower LDL means less plaque. Less plaque means lower risk of heart attack and stroke.
Questions about a side effect? Ask us before you stop taking it. Never stop a cardiac medication on your own.

❤️ A heart attack doesn’t happen because the heart simply “stops working.” It happens because the heart muscle is being starved of oxygen.
Most heart attacks begin when plaque inside a coronary artery becomes damaged or ruptures. A blood clot can then form at that site, severely reducing or completely blocking blood flow to part of the heart.
Without oxygen-rich blood, heart muscle cells begin to suffer injury. And the longer that artery stays blocked, the greater the risk of permanent heart damage.
Warning signs can include chest pressure or discomfort, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or pain that spreads to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, or jaw.
The key is time. Restoring blood flow quickly can limit damage and improve survival.
At Cross County Cardiology, we believe understanding your cardiovascular risk—and recognizing the warning signs—can make all the difference.

eg pain when you walk that stops when you rest.
That pattern has a name: claudication. It's one of the most common signs of peripheral artery disease — narrowed arteries limiting blood flow to your legs.
Most people write it off as aging. It isn't.

Feeling fine is not the same as being screened.
Heart disease can advance for years without symptoms. After 60, routine screening is how it gets caught early — while it's still manageable.

🩸 A blood clot in your leg can become a life-threatening emergency in your lungs.
A Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) forms in a deep vein, most commonly in the leg. The danger begins when part of that clot breaks free and travels through the bloodstream.
It can move through the inferior vena cava → right side of the heart → pulmonary artery.
If the clot becomes lodged in an artery supplying the lungs, it can cause a Pulmonary Embolism (PE) — a potentially life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention.
DVT → Right Heart → Pulmonary Artery → Pulmonary Embolism
Symptoms such as sudden shortness of breath, unexplained chest pain, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, or coughing up blood should never be ignored.
At Cross County Cardiology, our team evaluates cardiovascular risk and helps patients recognize and manage conditions that can lead to serious complications.

What is non-invasive arterial testing?
No needles. No radiation. No incisions.
An ABI compares blood pressure at your ankle and your arm. A Doppler ultrasound listens to blood moving through the artery. Together they map your circulation and help us find peripheral artery disease early.
Both are performed on-site at Cross County Cardiology.

Waist size can predict heart risk — even at a normal weight.
A study from the American College of Cardiology found that belly fat, especially in men, raises the risk of several heart problems in people whose overall weight looks fine on paper.
Visceral fat around the organs behaves differently than fat under the skin.

Your heart has its own highway system—and when traffic backs up, problems can happen.
Most people think of the heart as a pump, but it's also powered by an incredible electrical system that keeps every heartbeat perfectly timed.
Think of it like New Jersey's highways.
Your sinoatrial (SA) node is the heart's natural pacemaker, setting the rhythm for every beat. The electrical signal then travels to the atrioventricular (AV) node, which acts like a traffic controller—regulating how quickly the signal moves from the upper chambers to the lower chambers. Finally, specialized electrical pathways rapidly deliver that signal throughout the heart, allowing it to contract in one smooth, coordinated motion.
When this electrical system works properly, your heart beats efficiently.
When it doesn't, it can lead to irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias), dizziness, palpitations, or other symptoms that deserve evaluation.
At Cross County Cardiology, we help patients understand how their hearts work and use advanced diagnostic testing to identify electrical abnormalities before they become more serious.
❤️ A healthy heartbeat starts with a healthy electrical system.

“Heart failure” is one of the most misunderstood terms in medicine.
The name says your heart has failed. What it actually means: your heart isn't pumping as efficiently as it should — a condition that can be diagnosed, treated, and managed.
Millions of Americans live with it. Understanding it is the first step.
