Fire Station 55 (1605 South Ridgewood Avenue) is honored to permanently display a powerful piece of American history. Through the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey’s artifact program, Edgewater Fire Rescue was entrusted with a section of steel recovered from the World Trade Center. More than 2,600 pieces of steel and other items were distributed to communities across the nation to ensure the memory, heroism, and sacrifice of September 11, 2001, will never be forgotten.

This artifact, now on display at Station 55, comes directly from one of the towers destroyed in the terrorist attacks.

The effort to bring this memorial to Edgewater was deeply personal. Retired Captain Jill Danigel and her husband traveled to New York City to retrieve the steel and return it to our community. Retired Driver Engineer/Paramedic Greg Swets then designed and constructed the monument, incorporating bricks salvaged from the original Fire Station 55.

The department invites the public to visit Station 55 to view the artifact and reflect on the lives lost that day—2,753 at the World Trade Center, including 343 FDNY firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, and 37 Port Authority police officers. Edgewater Fire Rescue also carries a direct connection: Retired FDNY Chief Joseph Daly, who volunteered with our department for more than 20 years, lost his nephew, Edward J. Rall of FDNY Rescue 2, on September 11. Read more about Edward J. Rall at https://www.firehero.org/fallen-firefighter/edward-j-rall/

We encourage everyone to pause, remember, and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We will never forget.
