🐾 Meet Rosie — a sweet young pup looking for her forever home. 🐾

Rosie’s foster home is coming to an end shorty and we do not have another place for her.

Rosie had a very rough start to life. She spent her early days confined to an apartment with little to no opportunity to experience the outside world. We don’t know everything she may have endured, and we’re not sure whether she was abused, but we do know that she needs time, patience, understanding, and a quiet environment to learn that the world can be a safe place.

We are looking for a single person or a couple without children who live a quiet, calm lifestyle and are willing to give Rosie the time she needs to decompress and build confidence.

The rescue is committed to Rosie and her future. We will help cover the cost of a professional trainer coming into her new home to work with Rosie and her family, so they won’t have to navigate this journey alone.

We truly believe Rosie can heal and flourish with the right person, patience, consistency, and love. ❤️ Once she gains confidence and learns to trust, we believe she will become an amazing companion and, in time, be able to enjoy a much more active life.

Rosie doesn’t need someone to “fix” her. She needs someone who will believe in her, go at her pace, and give her the chance to become the dog she was always meant to be.

If you think you could be that person or family for Rosie, please reach out and help us give this sweet girl the second chance she deserves. 🐶❤️

Please go to our website gsgsr.org and fill out the adoption application.

🐕THE DOG BEHIND THE DOG🐕

This Friday, Heart of the Beast hits theaters, starring Brad Pitt alongside Odin, a retired military working dog. We are excited to watch it!

But here's something we think every Shepherd lover should know:

Odin is played primarily by a real working dog named Uber. ❤️

Uber isn't just a dog who was taught a few movie tricks. He is a real-life mountain rescue dog from New Zealand, with years of working experience behind him. Uber's three sons: Seeka, Ryker, and Hondo, also worked on the film as his stunt doubles and stand-ins.

So when you watch Odin navigate difficult terrain, respond to his handler, remain focused in chaotic environments, and demonstrate that incredible Shepherd intensity and loyalty, you're seeing the result of something that took years of training, relationship-building, repetition and trust.

And THAT is the part we really want people to remember.

🎬 Hollywood makes working dogs look effortless.

But there is no magic switch. It requires a lot of work.

A dog doesn't come home from a shelter (or breeder) and suddenly become the incredible, perfectly obedient, fearless Shepherd you see on a movie screen.

Behind a dog like Uber are countless hours of training, thousands of repetitions, experienced handlers, proper socialization, environmental exposure, veterinary care, food, equipment, time and money.

And even then, every dog is an individual.

A working-breed dog may have incredible potential while still being young, overwhelmed, under-socialized, reactive, impulsive or simply inexperienced. Some need months or years of patient work before that potential begins to shine.

At Char-Wills German Shepherd Rescue, we have had dogs come in rough around the edges who go to be working dogs that shine just like this...but don't expect it on day 1 or even day 90. (Rescue Rule of 3s!)

The loyalty, intelligence, courage and incredible bond that make Shepherds so special are grown over time with patience and consisitency.

And once that bond is there?

There really is nothing quite like a Shepherd. ❤️🐺

So when you watch Heart of the Beast this weekend, take a moment to appreciate the dog behind the character — and remember the countless hours of work that made that performance possible.

Hollywood may make it look effortless.
We know better.

Our rescue is looking for an in-home board-and-train program for one of our dogs. We are a small, foster-based nonprofit rescue run entirely by volunteers, and we are hoping to find a trainer who is willing to work with a rescue organization and understand the unique challenges we face.

We are incredibly grateful to our generous donors who make it possible for us to continue saving dogs in need. We understand that professional training can be costly, and we are doing everything we can to find the right solution for this sweet young pup.

We believe this dog deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and have a wonderful life in a loving forever home. We are hoping to find a trainer who may be willing to work with us, whether through a rescue discount, reduced rate, or another creative option.

If you offer in-home board and train and are willing to work with a small nonprofit rescue, please reach out to us by email [email protected]. We would be incredibly grateful for your help in giving this deserving pup the fresh start they need.

Thank you to everyone who supports rescue and helps give these dogs the second chances they deserve. ❤️🐾

GSGSR New Dog Decompression & Adjustment Guidelines

When you bring home your newly adopted or foster dog, GSGSR has protocols that need to be followed to help ensure a successful transition and a positive experience for both you and your new pup.

Give Your Dog Time to Decompress

Your new dog needs time to decompress, feel safe, and adjust to their new environment. They also need time to gradually meet and become comfortable with the family members living in the home.

Decompression can take anywhere from three weeks to three months or longer, every dog is different. The amount of time needed depends on the individual dog, their history, personality, and how they adjust to their new family and surroundings.

Keep Things Simple at First
During the decompression period:
• Do not take your dog to dog parks.
• Do not arrange meet-and-greets with unfamiliar pets outside the home.
• Avoid unnecessary outings and overstimulating environments.
• Give your dog a quiet, predictable routine while they learn that their new home is a safe place.

There will be plenty of time for social activities, new experiences, and outings once your dog is comfortable and ready.

Watch for Signs of Stress

Dogs can become overstimulated very quickly. Taking a newly adopted dog to different stores, public places, or unfamiliar environments before they are fully comfortable can result in a stress reaction.
You may notice changes such as:
• Drinking more water than usual
• Sleeping much more than usual
• Hiding or withdrawing
• Appearing overwhelmed or anxious
• Becoming fearful or reactive

These behaviors can be part of the adjustment process. Your dog has just experienced a major life change, and they need patience, consistency, and time.

Don't Rush the Process

Rushing your dog before they are ready can have the opposite effect of what you want. Instead of becoming more comfortable, a dog may shut down, become fearful, or develop reactive behaviors.

Allow your dog to set the pace. Build trust through a calm routine, patience, positive experiences, and consistency.

Our Adoption & Foster Commitment

When you sign the GSGSR adoption or foster contract, you are also agreeing to follow our protocols and guidelines. These protocols are in place to help give your new dog the best possible opportunity to successfully transition into their new home.

If you need help finding a qualified trainer or behavior professional, GSGSR is happy to provide trainer references and guidance.

Most importantly, remember: decompression takes time. Give your new dog the patience, structure, and understanding they need. The foundation you build during those first weeks can make a tremendous difference in your relationship for years to come.

🐾 Rosie Needs Her Forever Home 🐾

We know Rosie’s person is out there somewhere. We just need to help them find each other. ❤️

Rosie was failed by humans. She experienced neglect, and now she is the one living with the fear and uncertainty that came from it. As a rescue, we simply couldn’t leave her behind in the life she was living.

Now, Rosie’s time in foster care is running out—and we only have a few weeks to find her the forever home she so desperately deserves. 💔

Rosie is a sweet girl who needs patience, understanding, and a quiet home where she can finally feel safe. She would do best with a single person or a couple, with no children. She has done well with cats.

Her future family will need to understand that Rosie may not trust them right away. She needs someone willing to give her time, respect her boundaries, and let her build confidence at her own pace.

In home Training is a most of Rosie’s journey. The rescue will help contribute toward training to give her family the support they need to help Rosie work through her fears and learn how to simply be a dog. 🐾

Rosie has so much potential. She just needs someone who will believe in her, be patient with her, and show her that people can be kind.

⏰ We only have a few weeks to find Rosie her forever home.

She has already been through so much. She deserves the chance to finally experience what a safe, loving home feels like. ❤️

If you believe you could be the right person—or the right couple—for Rosie, please visit the GSGSR website and complete an adoption application.

🙏 Please share Rosie’s story. Her person may be out there, and your share could be what finally helps them find each other.

🐾 Rosie deserves a better life.
❤️ Let’s help her find it.

Meet Stevie! 🐾
Stevie is currently in a loving foster home and doing wonderfully! We believe this sweet girl is around 8 years young, but she certainly acts younger. She is friendly with everyone she meets, including other animals.
Stevie may need a little time to settle into a new environment, but once she does, she blossoms. She didn’t have the opportunity to learn many of the basics in her previous situation, so she is working on some basic training and learning what it means to be part of a home.

Her foster family is introducing her to all the good things in life—frequent walks, playing in the yard, snuggling on the couch, and discovering just how much fun toys can be!

Stevie is a sweet, loving girl who is eager to learn and enjoy life. With patience, consistency, and lots of love, we know she will continue to thrive. This special girl will not disappoint! ❤️🐶

🐾 Meet Raven! 🐾
This super sweet and friendly girl will be turning 2 years old soon, and she’s ready to find her forever family! ❤️
Raven is:
• 🐶 Good with other dogs
• 👧 Great with children
• ❤️ Quick to bond with her person
• 🌳 Always up for an adventure!
She can go with a respectful neutered male dog.

Raven would thrive in an active home that will take her on long walks, play with her in the yard, and continue keeping her social with both dogs and people. She can get excited when meeting new people, but she settles down quickly and would benefit from a family committed to continuing her training.

She would love a companion who isn’t gone for long hours every day. Whether it’s going on hikes, visiting dog-friendly stores, or enjoying outdoor events, Raven wants to be part of the fun! 🥰

If Raven sounds like the girl for you, please visit gsgsr.org and fill out an adoption application.

Already submitted an application and interested in Raven? Please email [email protected] and include your application number or the name on your application.

Let's help Raven find the loving, active forever home she deserves! 🐾❤️

Rosie needs a patient and understanding of what she needs. Please let’s give this sweet girl a 2nd chance to be a dog.

Her foster home is coming to an end and we have no placement for her.

🐾 Meet Rosie — She’s Still Waiting for Her Second Chance 🐾

Rosie has been with our rescue for about six months and has spent time in a few different foster homes. When she first came to us, she was completely shut down and scared. We were told she had been found alone in an abandoned apartment, and although we don’t know everything she experienced before coming to us, it’s clear that life has not always been kind to this sweet girl.

When we met Rosie, we knew she needed help. ❤️
With each foster home, Rosie has made progress. She has slowly learned that people can be trusted and that she is safe. But she still has a long way to go, and we know she needs the right person to help her continue that journey.

Rosie needs a quiet, calm home with someone who understands that trust takes time. She will need patience, consistency, love, and continued training as she learns to leave her past behind.

Although Rosie has lived in foster homes with children and other animals and has made progress in those environments, we believe her best match will be a home without children or possibly a calm cat or a respectful neutered male. She needs a peaceful environment where she can focus on building confidence and learning what it means to simply be a dog.

We believe Rosie is around 2–3 years old. She has so much life ahead of her, and we truly believe there is a sweet girl underneath all that fear — a girl who deserves the opportunity to finally feel safe and loved. 🐶❤️

Rosie doesn't need someone looking for a perfect dog. She needs someone willing to give her the time, patience, and second chance she has always deserved.
Please help us find Rosie the quiet forever home where she can finally blossom. She deserves a chance to prove just how special she can be. 🐾
