At first glance, this may look like a quick and traditional way to prepare fresh-cut fries. Look a little closer, and the ergonomic risk becomes hard to miss.
This worker is repeatedly reaching above shoulder height, extending his arm, leaning to the side, and applying significant downward force. Now multiply that motion by hundreds of potatoes and several cases during a single shift.
Even though a mechanical cutter is being used, the way the equipment is positioned may still expose the employee to:
⚠️ Repetitive overhead motion
⚠️ Forceful exertion
⚠️ Awkward shoulder and neck positioning
⚠️ Limited recovery time between movements
Over time, these risk factors can contribute to fatigue, strain, and potentially serious musculoskeletal injuries. Tradition may be important to a restaurant, but it should never prevent us from asking whether a task can be performed more safely.
Could the cutter be installed at a better height? Could a powered or lever-assisted system reduce the force required? Could employees rotate tasks to limit prolonged exposure?
Restaurant employees also work around sharp tools, hot surfaces, fryers, grease, and constant slip-and-trip hazards. Their safety deserves the same thoughtful planning we expect in construction, manufacturing, and other high-risk industries.

We’re looking for an experienced, environmentally focused EHS professional to support a busy manufacturing facility and make an immediate impact on environmental compliance and workplace safety.
Key areas of responsibility include:

🚧 Beyond the Injury: The Lasting Impact of a Jobsite Accident

Construction sites are built on teamwork, trust, and a shared commitment to safety. But when a serious injury or fatality occurs, the effects reach far beyond the person directly involved.
Coworkers who witness or learn about a serious incident may experience shock, grief, anxiety, guilt, or fear. Some may question whether they could have done something differently. Others may struggle to regain confidence when returning to the jobsite. In the case of a fatality, the emotional impact can leave lasting scars across the entire workforce.
The effects can also appear in other ways:
· Difficulty concentrating
· Reduced productivity
· Increased stress or fear
· Damage to team cohesion
· Higher absenteeism
· Increased employee turnover
· Symptoms of grief or post-traumatic stress
Employers have a critical responsibility to support employees through the aftermath of a serious workplace incident.
That support begins with open and honest communication. Employees need to understand what is known, what actions are being taken, and how the organization plans to prevent a similar incident from happening again. Clear communication reduces rumors, builds trust, and demonstrates strong leadership during an incredibly difficult time.
Emotional support is just as important. Employees should be encouraged to speak openly about their concerns and reminded that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Employee Assistance Programs, grief counseling, mental health professionals, and other support resources can make a meaningful difference.
Supervisors should also be prepared to recognize signs that someone may be struggling, including withdrawal from coworkers, irritability, behavioral changes, trouble concentrating, or increased absences. Early intervention can help prevent these challenges from becoming more severe.
Following a serious incident, the investigation should focus on identifying root causes, not assigning blame. Sharing lessons learned and implementing meaningful corrective actions helps rebuild confidence and shows employees that their safety is truly the priority.
Acknowledging the human impact can also be an important part of healing. A moment of silence, safety stand-down, team discussion, or another meaningful tribute can honor those affected while reminding everyone why safe work practices matter.
Preventing serious injuries and fatalities must always be the goal. But preparing to support employees after an incident is also an essential part of a strong safety program.

⚠️ Do not enter a hazardous situation without proper training and equipment

🚧 A stop-work can save a life. 🚧
A few weeks ago, Clint Sharp, CSP encountered workers inside an excavation with no protective system in place. Concrete forms further restricted their ability to exit quickly, creating an even greater risk in the event of a collapse or other emergency.
Even more concerning, the workers were unaware of the hazards surrounding them.
A stop-work was immediately called, and everyone was required to exit the excavation before work could continue safely.
This is why hazard recognition, proper planning, worker education, and stop-work authority are so important. Speaking up is not about slowing down the job—it is about preventing an incident and ensuring every worker makes it home safely.
