It’s easy to expect others to understand where we’re coming from. It’s harder to extend that same effort when we see things differently.

Building understanding means being willing to listen, share our own perspective, and meet each other with curiosity, even when we don’t agree. It starts with a willingness to give the same consideration we hope to receive.

We asked people on the street: Is compassion an American value?

Everyday Americans explore what divides us and understand what unites us.

The line between journalism and activism?

Clarissa Ward draws a distinction between journalism and activism, arguing that reporting the news means being faithful to facts, not pushing an agenda.

That doesn’t mean every journalist needs to share the same perspective. Different voices can bring attention to overlooked stories and challenge what we think we know. The key is having a shared commitment to truth and journalistic ethics.

As consumers of news, we should ask whether we’re getting the facts or being told what to think. Stay curious. Question what you see and seek out different perspectives.

Understanding someone doesn’t require us to agree with them. It asks us to get curious about what shaped their perspective before deciding what we think of it.

We can hold firm to our values while making room to learn something from someone who sees the world differently. That’s where meaningful conversations begin.

9 years ago, Willie Nelson sat down with The Washington Post’s Libby Casey to talk about voting and how Americans can come together.

His message focuses on recognizing that disagreement is inevitable, but that we can still ask what we can do about the problems we see. One answer: vote.

We may not always agree, but that’s not the point. Understanding what makes us different and why is part of the process.

Bill Maher says “bipartisanship” has become a dirty word…

Working with the other side can be framed as selling out, while fighting with them is often treated as proof you’re doing your job.

But disagreement is inevitable. The question is whether we can still work together when there’s something worth getting done.

Some of the most important work in government happens when people with different political views find enough common ground to move things forward. That work may not make for the loudest headline, but it’s worth paying attention to.

We can disagree on politics, beliefs, and just about everything in between. But disagreement doesn’t erase the person behind the opinion.

Taking our differences seriously also means remembering they’re not the whole story.

Joe Pesci delivers a pretty sharp lesson on the Constitution in “With Honors”...

The founders knew they didn’t have all the answers. They made mistakes, left room to correct them, and built a government meant to be shaped by the people.

A government of citizens, not royalty. Of listeners, not lecturers. The Constitution’s power comes from us, not fancy speeches or rigid rules, but from people willing to keep learning and do better.

Let’s not forget that.
