🚗⭐ Did you know Elizabeth once helped build the cars that moved America?
In the 1920s, automotive pioneer William “Billy” Durant, the founder of General Motors, came to Elizabeth to build his next automobile venture: Durant Motors.
At a massive factory right here in the city, the company produced the Star, an affordable automobile created to compete in the same growing market as Ford’s Model T.
🏭 Imagine Elizabeth a century ago: assembly lines moving, engines starting, and brand-new cars rolling out of the factory before traveling across the country and beyond.
And there’s an unexpected twist to the story… 🍪
The industrial site that once produced automobiles would later become connected to another chapter of Elizabeth manufacturing—cookies.
From automobiles to food production, Elizabeth’s industrial past is filled with stories most people would never expect.

💍🇺🇸 Did you know one of the most remarkable weddings of the American Revolution took place right here in Elizabeth?
In 1778, Catherine Peartree Smith and Elisha Boudinot were married at what is now known as the Belcher-Ogden Mansion—but this was no ordinary wedding.
Among those connected to the celebration were some of the most recognizable names of the American Revolution: George Washington, the Marquis de Lafayette, and Alexander Hamilton. Imagine them gathered under one roof in Elizabeth while the Revolution was still unfolding.
And with British forces active in the region, the story becomes even more dramatic. The property would later face a British raid, adding another chapter to a home that witnessed the uncertainty and conflict of Revolutionary America.
More than two centuries later, the Belcher-Ogden Mansion still stands, preserving a remarkable connection between present-day Elizabeth and the birth of the nation.
🏡 Next time you explore Elizabeth, remember: you’re not just visiting historic places—you’re walking through places where American history actually happened.

🎬✨ Did you know Broad Street was once one of Elizabeth’s movie destinations?
Long before today’s storefronts, downtown Elizabeth came alive after dark with glowing marquees, crowds waiting for the next show, and families making a night out of going to the movies.
At 51 Broad Street, the New Theater opened in 1940. And it was part of a larger movie-going era downtown, alongside theaters including the Regent, Liberty, and Ritz. 🎞️
Today, the former New Theater is home to Bobby’s Department Store—but look closely at the building and you can still spot architectural clues from another chapter of Broad Street’s history.
It’s a reminder that sometimes history isn’t behind museum glass.
Sometimes, it’s hiding in plain sight on the streets we walk every day. 👀
