In an effort to improve fuel economy, and reduce unnecessary engine load, mechanical engine-driven cooling fans have largely given way to electric cooling fans. Depending on the application, these systems may use high and low speed relays or a PCM-controlled pulse-width modulated (PWM) signal sent to a fan control module.
