Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network

Last week, our Executive Director, Jackie, welcomed 16 students from the De Colores Service Squad—a summer leadership and service program through the First United Church of Christ—to Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network.

During their visit, the students participated in two interactive activities designed to build empathy and understanding of the challenges many families face. They explored the difficult budget decisions a family might make after a job loss and took on the challenge of planning one day of nutritious meals with a limited budget.

These hands-on exercises sparked thoughtful conversations about food insecurity, financial hardship, and the importance of supporting neighbors in need right here in our community.

Elmhurst households who are "Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed" are the ones who fall between the cracks of support services. ALICE households represent men and women of all ages and races who are working but unable to afford the basic necessities of housing, food, child care, health care, and transportation due to the lack of jobs that can support basic necessities and increases in the basic cost of living.
