Fall is here. You can tell because the sunset's a little earlier, and someone posted a pumpkin.

That's it. That's the whole seasonal shift. It's still 72 at Swami's, I'm still in flip flops, and I've decided that's the best possible way to do fall.

And here's the part I actually love: nothing dramatic ever changes. The best things usually don't — and a good retirement strategy is one of them. Steady. Predictable. Still there at golden hour, no matter what the market's up to that year. That's kind of the whole point.

Anyway. Happy fall. Go catch the sunset at Moonlight and leave the sweater at home.

People ask me all the time where to go in Encinitas. I've got a list.

Moonlight Beach bench at sunset, homemade margaritas involved. Roxy's for live music and a burger. Las Olas. The Coast Walk. The Saloon for happy hour.

But my actual favorite spot isn't on the list. It's wherever these people are.

Getting all of us in one place takes more coordinating than it used to. Still worth it.

Happy Labor Day.

Out of college I had two offers. Valet at a hotel in La Jolla, where the tips were great — except the job required nice shoes I couldn’t afford. Or selling mortgage leads at Standard Insurance, where the hand-me-down suit already hanging in my closet would do just fine.

A hundred cold calls a day. Ten people would pick up. Five would agree to meet. One would say yes.

I don’t make those calls anymore. Now I mostly help friends and neighbors build the retirement they deserve. Better job — and better shoes.

Someone asked me this week:
“Do I have to die for my life insurance to be worth anything?”

This is a question I get a lot. And it’s an important one.

Short answer: no. Some policies come with living benefits — money you can use while you’re still here, like if a serious illness hits and care gets expensive.

Today is National Senior Citizens Day — a phrase not one of my clients would use to describe themselves.

And they'd be right. The people I work with are traveling, starting businesses, chasing grandkids, and learning to surf. Running circles around folks half their age.

So instead of “senior citizens,” let's just call it what it is: the people who put in the work and earned the good part.
