🔥 “The most dangerous thing that can happen has happened. We’ve learned how to be religious without God.” – B. H. Clendennen Bertram Hamilton Clendennen (1922–2009) was an American Pentecostal preacher, missionary and founder of the School of Christ International. He came out of war, hard living and years of drinking before meeting Christ in 1949. He later testified that he went into that meeting one kind of man and came out another. The drunkard did not need polishing. He needed a new life. In 1956 Clendennen founded Victory Temple in Beaumont, Texas, where he served for more than three decades. His preaching carried one relentless burden: the Church may possess sermons, machinery, crowds and religious language and still be terribly empty of God. Holiness, prayer, obedience, the cross and the life of the Holy Spirit were not ornaments to Christianity for him. They were Christianity lived. In his own sermons he repeatedly said that churches had learned “how to be religious without God.” Religion can preserve the vocabulary of Pentecost while losing its fire. It can speak of Christ while self still occupies the throne. “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof” 2 Timothy 3:5. His ministry reached far beyond Texas. He preached across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Soviet world, helped build churches in East Africa and laboured for years in missions. At seventy, when many men would have retired, he resigned his pastorate and went toward the former Soviet Union. In 1992 the first School of Christ was established there to train indigenous ministers in prayer, Scripture, holiness and Spirit-filled life. The work spread internationally. Its curriculum now contains 19 series and more than 150 lessons, and School of Christ records report ministry in more than 150 nations. Clendennen died on December 13, 2009, but the school continued. In 2026 it was still training ministers and holding residential schools.
