If people want to understand why the price of beef is up this is one of the major reasons. While filling this swather with diesel - every minute I hold the handle down on this pump costs us another $90. Last year it was $40. In 5.5 minutes we spent 500.00 bucks tonight. We are small farmers. The big guys move the decimal over 2 places to the right.
Add in fertilizer that has doubled and we have real problems brewing in the Ag industry.
Hay is going for the same price it was last year. This is 100% unsustainable. America needs to be self sufficient with respect to energy and food.
Buy local or there won’t be any of us left before long. Then the prices REALLY go up.
If you want to know what efficiency looks like putting up hay - 2 high speed balers going and a guy who REALLY knows what he’s doing in a harrowbed. 750 bales (40 tons) made and stacked in 2.5 hours. 💪

People who see it from the outside (or social media) might think that ranch life is all rainbows and unicorns. It’s NOT….at all.
Last night irrigation water didn’t come until 10:30pm so someone had to be up all night moving water across all of our fields. Unfortunately Hunter and a Roxy managed to find a skunk at 11:30 at night. Kaylee and Keagan had to wake up and shampoo them in the wee hours of the morning while irrigation continued. Never a dull moment!

I want to send the biggest shout out to Karla, Kaylee and Keagan. This morning they baled up about 1200 bales of hay while I was literally on the other side of the country. Karla raked it all up and coordinated the “kids” efforts.
Keagan does a great job helping me maintain the equipment as all 3 balers ran all morning without missing a knot. That’s no accident.
I bid my entire airline schedule off to put up hay in the last week of May. Unfortunately we got almost 2 inches of rain that week. That pushed things off to June and onto Karla and the kids shoulders. They did a fantastic job and I couldn’t be prouder of them.

*** SOLD OUT for a couple weeks***
Rolling Horse Ranch currently has premium endophyte free fescue / orchard / alfalfa mix - (70% grass, 30% alfalfa) - $18.50 / bale in 68 bale blocks. This includes free delivery via retriever truck within 25 miles of 4405 Schurz Hwy - Fallon NV. Pickup of smaller quantities available for $19.50 per bale. Hay was cut on 21 May 2026 and put in the barn on 26 May 2026.
*** We recognize that this years hay prices are more than last year. Unfortunately all of our input costs have gone up SIGNIFICANTLY. The same ton of nitrogen fertilizer we bought last year for $700 / ton is $1,100 this year. The red diesel fuel we bought last year for $3.10 / gallon is $5.25 this year. We can only eat so much of that cost before it’s not worth doing. Thank you for your understanding. ***

Honored and humbled for RHR to be a sponsor for LeAnne Wallace to Ring the Bell in August signifying her being cancer free. Kaylee and Leanne are the best of friends and have been for a long time. If there is a single cause we can get onboard with its wiping children’s cancer off the face of this earth. It’s going to be a PARTY on August 21st!!! 🔔 🔔 🔔
We have to add one LeAnne picture of our own….

It’s been a long time since we have made any updates but a couple big things have happened at RHR recently.
1. We purchased a freezer trailer this winter. Erin from Fallon Sign LLC put a beautiful wrap on it. This will allow all of our customers to pick up beef directly from our ranch vice Karla having to meet customers at the butcher. This will make her life so much easier and allow our customers to see our operation when they pick up their beef.
2. Irrigation season has officially started. All the crops look good despite mother nature making it 17F and 83F in the same day!!!
3. We purchased a new 300 gallon / 40’ boom sprayer that allows us to spray nitrogen (and other fertilizer) directly on to the plant vice the granular method we have traditionally used. This enables us to stretch our fertilizer farther which is a HUGE deal as fertilizer and diesel prices continue to climb.
4. The last of the calves are being born. I think we have 2 mamas left to calve. The last little girl was born 4 days ago and she is happy and healthy.
People have asked when we will have hay. We should have grass / alfalfa mix available around 1 June and we will have 2nd crop alfalfa around 10th of July.
