Historical Reference
Originally opened as the New Rex Theatre in 1920, the building now known as the Fallon Theatre was created by vaudeville performers J.W. and Maybelle Flood and designed by renowned Nevada architect Frederic DeLongchamps. Built as an ambitious entertainment venue in the heart of a growing Fallon, it hosted vaudeville performances and silent films before adapting to the era of talking pictures. Over more than a century, the theatre survived fires, earthquakes, changing technology, and generations of audiences while remaining one of the most recognizable landmarks on historic Maine Street.
Artist’s Reflection
The Fallon Theatre
Some places become more than the buildings that occupy them. They become part of the identity of a community.
For more than a century, the Fallon Theatre has stood along Maine Street while the town around it grew and changed. Generations have gathered beneath its marquee, and its glowing sign has become an unmistakable piece of home.
I chose the Fallon Theatre to begin The Oasis Series because I wanted the collection to start in the heart of our community. I painted it at the transition from day to night, when the last warmth of the Nevada sunset meets the lights of downtown Fallon.
This painting is my tribute to a landmark that has endured and to the small town that continues to gather around it.

The 10th annual Fallon Theatre Show-N-Shine brought 131 vintage cars, motorcycles, and pickups to several blocks of Maine Street on Sept. 26.
The event has grown considerably since the first show in 2016, when 43 cars participated. This year's entries came from California, Lovelock, Winnemucca, Reno, and Fallon.
Mike and Susan McConnell of Fallon won Best in Show with their 1957 Ford Custom, a car built over seven years. Mike McConnell said he waited 20 years to buy the car before the project began in 2019. Their names will be added to the Fallon Theatre Show-N-Shine Revolving Trophy.
“I wanted the timeless style of a beautiful 1957 Ford, combined with the comfort and convenience of a modern car: cruise control, air conditioning, power steering, intermittent wipers, backup cameras, and all the modern conveniences,” McConnell said.
Family and friends helped McConnell complete the project during its final two years.
