Hiked the three tiers of Rattlesnake Ledge yesterday. Gorgeous weather. Came across a magnificent flush of ghost pipe mushrooms too. I’m glad to have gotten there early. The parking lot was nearly empty at 8am but the trail was packed on the way down. Early starts always make for a better day of hiking.

This is why goodly folks love a barter economy! Traded some seeds for these delights with a neighbor. I love when our gardens can help meet each others’ needs! Stoked to tuck into these.

Had an absolutely smokin’ experience with tide pools in Puget Sound this week. May, June and July low tides always serve. In order, Clown Nudibranch, Fuzzy Mouse Nudibranch, Sea Cucumber, Monterey Dorid, and some sort of burrowing anemone.

Had to pack my vintage Northern Michigan Made sweatshirt out to Murdock Beach on Tuesday for the summer low tide. Murdock Beach is a huge trove of concretions and fossils. Murdock Craft Cannabis, however, is from Michigan, now expanding to Jamaica. The murdockcraftgenetics Triple Cherry menu is a thing of beauty. I was gifted this burly sweatshirt by Murdock (I’ve never heard him called Joe, just Murdock) at the Science of Regen Cultivation gathering in Garberville in 2020. That meaningful event connected all sorts of Regen people and was of a sort we won’t see again. Too much has changed. The trading day was truly awe inspiring. The genetics and double secret product people brought out were really something. Oh, to go back to that day. Murdock and I became friendly and he hooked me up with this sweatshirt. How it has lasted over six years of farm life is beyond me. Maybe it’s because he printed onto Carhartt. This sweatshirt is burly. Good memories to turn over while on the beach looking at 20,000 year old fossils.

We added deer fence, cleared weeds and grass, and worked on new beds today to expand the winter squash. The sunshine was very supportive. We don’t till much here, but until today this ground was yard space packed down over the years. So I tilled it, worked in some aged horse mulch from the sanctuary up the hill, and generously amended with the Nutrient Pack from . It’s true, if I’m in a mood, and have the time, hand mixing natural amendments is fun and good. But, honestly, I’m using Nutrient Pack to amend the entire food and flower gardens now. Of course I supplement with compost tea, microbe rich worm castings and other living stuff. But the base-need heavy-lifting nutrients are all in the Pack. I’m glad Tad turned me onto it years ago, and I’ve been using it ever since. Geez, nearly 10 years I’ve been using it.

Espresso Tonic. Wait, what? Apparently this is a popular summer drink in EUR. It sounded very strange, so I had to try it. My barista didn’t keep tonic behind the bar so I ran over to the gas station and bought my own. Brought it back to her and got a chuckle. 12oz cup, ice, fill with tonic, add one shot espresso. OMG. It is so good. It tastes like sour coffee. Do you like sour candy or sour beers? It’s like that. Sour sits on the middle of the tongue, but it’s liquid so it goes away. And then you sip and the sour power comes back…with coffee vibes too. Totally recommended. Bring your own tonic. 👍

I had no idea how important quality glass was until I experienced it for my first time. I’ve had binoculars my whole life, but always just something I picked up at a garage sale. But I was visiting with sporting conservationist on her property and she handed me a pair of Diamondback optics and everything changed. I went from simply identifying an animal, to being about to count feathers and see dorsal fin IDs on orca. Such a smashing difference! I immediately scored a pair myself. I know lots of us live rurally to farm, and the rest of us probably hike. I want to suggest ya check out a decent pair of binoculars if you love the outdoors, but have only ever had cheapies. It really does make the difference. They are so good, I’m rethinking my 10/22 competition scope choice too! Next skill to develop will be taking photos through them to share those photos with you.
