The Chuckanut Bay Rugby Club was founded in 1973 after a group of recent Western Washington University graduates realized that they couldn't play as Western students. They formed the club and established the Geoducks as the team mascot because of it's history as the most dangerous bi-valve in the Pacific Northwest.
