Want your child to spend less time on their phone? Taking it away is only part of the equation.

You also have to give them something worth putting it down for.

And Christina says that starts with figuring out what your child actually likes to do—not what you wish they were interested in.

For some kids, that might mean giving them a little more independence, challenge, and even what Christina calls “safe danger.”

Climbing. Building. Making something with real tools. Learning how to use age-appropriate equipment safely. Trying something that’s challenging enough that they might not get it right the first time.

The goal isn’t unnecessary risk. It’s giving kids opportunities to learn skills, build confidence, exercise judgment, and discover what they’re capable of with appropriate guidance.

Because if we’re trying to help kids build a life away from their phones, that offline life needs room for exploration, too.

Think about the version of you from five years ago.

Did they know exactly how everything was going to work out?

Probably not.

They didn’t know which plans would change. Which relationships would evolve. Which doors would close. Which unexpected opportunities would appear. Or exactly who they would become along the way.

And yet—

you’re here.

Not because everything happened according to plan. Not because every hard thing magically worked itself out.

But because when life changed, you responded.

You made decisions with the information you had. You adjusted. You asked for help. You learned things you couldn’t have known beforehand. You kept moving.

So if you’re standing in uncertainty right now, remember:

The fact that you can’t see exactly how this chapter will unfold doesn’t mean you won’t know what to do when you get there. 💛

Do you actually know what your child is watching online?

Not just which apps they’re allowed to have or which video games they’re allowed to play.

What are they actually consuming once they’re inside YouTube, TikTok, or other feeds?

Christina points out an interesting blind spot for parents: you might decide your child isn’t ready to play a particular video game—while they’re watching hours of clips from that same game or watching their favorite YouTuber play it.

That doesn’t mean parents need to panic or monitor every second of their child’s screen time.

But when we’re thinking about kids, phones, YouTube, TikTok, and screen time, it’s worth looking beyond how long they’re online.

What they’re consuming matters, too.

Get curious. Ask what they like watching. Sit down and watch some of it with them. Learn who their favorite creators are and what keeps showing up in their feeds.

Understanding their online world gives you a much better starting point for conversations and boundaries than assuming you already know what’s there.

There’s a particular kind of uncertainty that comes when you know what you’re leaving behind…but you don’t know what comes next.

The children have left home.
The relationship has changed.
The career no longer fits.
You’ve moved, graduated, retired, begun healing, or simply outgrown a version of yourself.

The old chapter has ended.

The new one hasn’t quite begun.

This in-between season is sometimes called liminal space—and it can feel uncomfortable precisely because there isn’t a clear answer yet.

But uncertainty doesn’t mean you’re off track.

Sometimes you’re simply in the space where you’re still discovering what comes next.

As author and life coach Nancy Levin reminds us:

“Honor the space between no longer and not yet.”

If you could use support navigating your own season of change, our Armonía team is here:

Does your child seem to get bored almost instantly?

Think about the pace of the content kids consume every day.

YouTube Shorts. TikTok. Reels. Videos sped up. And the second something stops being interesting?

Swipe.

Something new starts immediately.

Christina’s point isn’t that technology is inherently bad. It’s that when kids become accustomed to fast-paced, constantly changing digital content, the ordinary pace of life can feel very different by comparison.

Homework doesn’t change every 15 seconds.

A conversation isn’t endlessly entertaining.

Learning a new skill takes repetition.

And sometimes there is simply…nothing happening.

Helping kids develop a healthier relationship with phones, screen time, and boredom isn’t only about taking devices away. It’s also about giving them opportunities to experience slower activities, sustained attention, creativity, movement, and moments that don’t provide instant stimulation.

The Space Between No Longer and Not Yet: Navigating Life Transitions — Armonía Life Design | Counseling, Wellness Space & Retreats 09/27/2026

What if not knowing what comes next isn’t a problem you need to solve?

There is a part of transition that often gets skipped in the stories we tell.

We talk about the ending.

Then we talk about the exciting new beginning.

But between the two can be a much messier place:

You’re no longer where you were, but you aren’t yet where you’re going.

That in-between has a name: liminal space.

It can show up after a move, a career change, an empty nest, the end of a relationship, a period of grief, or any experience that changes the way you understand yourself and your life.

And when you’re accustomed to planning, solving, and moving forward, the uncertainty can be particularly uncomfortable.

In her newest article, Armonía founder Donna Marie Marino, LMFT, writes personally about finding herself in that space again as she prepares to leave the home where she raised her family.

She also looks back twenty years to another enormous transition: leaving a 25-year corporate career without knowing what would come next.

This is an article about waiting, stillness, identity, therapy, trusting your own resourcefulness—and giving the next chapter enough space to reveal itself.

If you’re somewhere between no longer and not yet, we hope you’ll spend a few minutes with this one. 💛

The Space Between No Longer and Not Yet: Navigating Life Transitions — Armonía Life Design | Counseling, Wellness Space & Retreats What happens when one chapter has ended but the next hasn’t begun? Donna Marie Marino, LMFT explores liminal space, uncertainty, life transitions, and learning to trust yourself in the in-between.

09/24/2026

Sometimes the hardest part of a transition isn’t letting go. It’s not knowing what comes next.

You’ve made the decision. The old chapter is ending—or maybe it already has.

And now you want the answer.

What’s the plan?
Where is this going?
What am I supposed to do next?
When will I feel settled again?

When you’ve spent years being someone who moves, solves, plans, and figures things out, the uncertainty of an in-between season can feel especially uncomfortable.

You have all this energy to move forward…

but nowhere clear to put it yet.

That doesn’t mean you’re off track. And it doesn’t mean you need to force an answer just to relieve the discomfort of not knowing.

Sometimes the next chapter needs a little time to become visible. 💛

Why can’t your kid just put the phone down?

If you’re an Indiana parent trying to reduce your child’s phone use or screen time, you’re probably asking this question a lot right now—especially as Indiana schools have introduced stronger restrictions around student cell phone use during the school day.

Christina’s reminder for parents is simple:

We didn’t grow up with this.

Today’s kids and teens are growing up with smartphones, social media, games, and apps designed to keep people engaged and coming back for more.

And adults struggle to put their phones down, too.

That doesn’t mean phone boundaries for kids aren’t important. They are.

But helping your child spend less time on their phone isn’t the same thing as expecting them to suddenly have no desire to use it.

Help them find things they genuinely enjoy offline. Create consistent phone-free times. Model those boundaries yourself. And give them some grace while they learn how to navigate technology in a world that looks very different from the one we grew up in.

If taking the phone away always turns into a battle, the phone may not be the best place to start.

For a lot of kids, their phone has become more than entertainment. It fills boredom. It gives them something predictable to do. It offers connection, stimulation, distraction, and a sense of control.

So when we remove it without giving them anything meaningful to move toward, we shouldn’t be surprised when they resist.

The goal isn’t simply less phone.

It’s helping kids build a life offline that has things they genuinely want to come back to: creativity, independence, manageable risks, connection, hobbies, and ownership over something that’s theirs.

Swipe through for five places to start before taking the phone away. ➡️
