If you can, staying indoors is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of heat-related illness. If you don't have air conditioning, these simple tips can help keep you and your home as cool as possible:
β’ Close your blinds and curtains to keep the sunlight out
β’ Keep windows closed during the day and open them at night to let cooler air in
β’ Take cool showers or apply a cool washcloth or ice pack to your wrists, neck, or back
β’ Place a bowl of ice in front of a fan for a simple homemade cooler
β’ If possible, sleep in the lowest level of your home, such as a basement, where it is often cooler
For more tips, visit www.ready.gov/heat
For information on local cooling centers, check with your municipality or visit dutchessny.gov/coolingcenters.
