Her fingers slid to the waistband of his sweatpants, not pulling, not teasing—just resting there like she belonged.
Like she’d always belonged.
His throat tightened.
“You keep doing that,” he murmured.
“Doing what?”
“Looking at me like that.”
Her lips parted. “Like what?”
He leaned in, brushing his mouth against hers. Barely a kiss.
Just heat.
“Like you’re not afraid,” he said.
Her breath hitched. “I’m not.”
He kissed her again—longer this time.
Still slow. Still controlled.
But it wasn’t sweet anymore.
It was the kind of kiss that turned the room into something smaller.
The kind that made the coffee irrelevant.
The kind that made her shift her hips without meaning to.

She looked down at him, hair falling forward, cheeks flushed.
“Now,” she whispered, fingers sliding over his shoulders, “what do you want to do with me?”
His hands gripped her thighs, firm.
His eyes locked on hers.
And his voice dropped into something that made her whole body go still.
“I want you to stay.”
The words landed like a heartbeat.
Not loud.
Not dramatic.
Just real.
Her expression changed.
Like she’d expected him to say something playful.
Something hot.
Something easy.
But that?
That felt like something else.
Something deeper.
She swallowed, then nodded.
“Okay,” she whispered.
And in the quiet of the garage—where the truck sat half-finished, where his life was grease and work and effort—he kissed her again.
Slower this time.
Like he wasn’t just taking.
Like he was choosing.
And for the first time, it didn’t feel like young love.
It felt like something that could last.
If you want,

She sat up, dragging the blanket higher, then lower again like she couldn’t decide if she wanted to hide or be seen.
Because that was the thing.
With him, she never knew which one she wanted more.
She opened her camera.
The first angle was safe. Too safe.
She deleted it.
The second was better—her face half-shadowed, eyes heavy, lips slightly parted like she’d been interrupted.
Still not enough.
Her heart beat harder.
She slid the blanket down just enough to show bare shoulder. The curve of her collarbone. Skin that looked soft in the warm light.
She took the photo.
Then another.
This one was closer. Her mouth. Her throat. The edge of her neckline. Nothing obscene. Nothing obvious.
Just a promise.
She hovered over the send button.
And hesitated.
Because sending it meant surrendering.
It meant admitting she wanted him the way she did—sharp, deep, and a little too much.
And he would feel that.
He’d take it.
She swallowed, then hit send.
The message whooshed away.
A second later, the typing bubble appeared.
Her breath caught instantly.
It disappeared.
Then came back.
Then disappeared again.
She let out a shaky laugh under her breath.
“God,” she whispered, “he’s doing it on purpose.”
She could practically picture him—standing there in that bathroom doorway, shoulders like a wall, phone in his hand, staring at her picture like he owned her.

“You Can’t Keep Me Down”

I’ve walked through fire, I’ve faced the fight.

I’ve known the darkness and found the light.

I’ve carried scars no eyes can see.

But every wound built more of the man I came to be.

So bring the storm, let thunder roll.

You may bend my back, but not my soul.

I’ve learned one truth from all I’ve been through.

Life can knock me down… but it can’t keep me there and that true.
