Great news! The rain couldn't stop the fun—it just delayed it! We’ve officially rescheduled Pumpkin Play Day, and we are throwing it on the ultimate fall day... Halloween morning!

We’re bringing back everything we had planned! Come hang out with us for a morning full of carnival games and lots of laughs. It’s completely free, and it’s the perfect, easy way to kick off Halloween before the evening of trick-or-treating begins!

Welcome back to another Nature in Focus! Today we’ll discuss an animal found both on the preserve and in our interpretive center.

The gulf coast box turtle (Terrapene carolina major) has a very distinctive shell, with a high dome shape and dark brown and yellow markings. Box turtles have a hinged plastron (belly portion of the shell) that allows them to contract completely inside their shell for protection from predators.

Box turtles are opportunistic omnivores, eating fruits, mushrooms, plants, eggs, carrion, invertebrates, and more.

Fun Fact: Box turtles have a homing instinct, allowing them to navigate home from an unfamiliar area.

THE EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 10TH!

Due to the unfavorable weather conditions expected this weekend, Olde Time Days has been rescheduled to Saturday, October 10, 2026, same time, same place at Bicentennial Park!

We announced yesterday that the Olde Time Days event for this year would move forward rain or shine; however, we have made the decision to reschedule the event. This decision was made due to the updated National Weather Service forecast showing a substantial rise in rain coverage and expected rainfall amounts that would directly impact event safety and operations.

While some vendors had prior commitments for the weekend of the 10th, our team is working hard to bring you the same great experience you look forward to every year.
