Grief for our pets can be equal to the grief we feel when a human dies, second to the loss of a spouse or child. But pet-loss related stress and grief is often times overlooked and dismissed. We want to change that. As a clinic or staff, we want to support you in supporting your clients to understand this grief is real and needs careful care and attention.

Loss is a serious emotional wound. The best way to begin the healing process is to acknowledge the loss and the pain it caused.

Allowing grief to be present in your life, is necessary for the healing process. Understanding grief and learning how to be present with grief, is the best way to heal from this loss.

Your veterinary staff guided clients through their pet's living. It makes sense you guide them through the end of their life. Creating a process for clients to ask questions and feel comfortable with their decisions, empowers them to make the hardest decisions about their best friends.

During grief, knowing you have support of others can help you manage your stress and grief. You are never alone with your grief. Talking to others is one way to care for yourself.

Memorialize your pet. Take pictures. Take videos. Create memorial items you can hold. Once your pet is gone, watching videos of their daily lives, or holding a paw print in your hands can provide you comfort by remembering the bond you shared throughout their life.

Honoring the bond between patient and client includes honoring the bond between you and your client. It makes sense most pet parents look to their veterinary staff for guidance in determining end of life care. Because you and your staff guided them through everything else.

Clinical experience and client surveys show pet parents are most touched by personal notes of condolence. These are also excellent opportunities to provide follow up care for your clients. Even when you are not sure of the "right words", this guide can help demonstrate the compassionate care you provided. There are many ways your office can follow up and continue to support clients after a patient death. A condolence card is the first step.

But to us - this little piece of clay holds the memory of a best friend no longer here. It holds all of the love shared over the lifetime of our best friend. It reminds us of the way their feet sounded when they ran. Or how their face lit up when we walked into a room. It is something to hold when a connection is lost. And it honors the bond shared, not just with a pet parent and their pet, but with the people who cared for their pet over their time here. It reminds them of the compassion and kindness showed by the people who helped them say goodbye.
