What fuels a Colorado State University Homecoming bonfire? Forest management. ๐ฒ๐ฅ
With help from the Society of American Foresters CSU chapter, we collected branches, logs and other woody material left over from work at Borden Memorial Forest.
Removing this material reduces wildfire fuels in the forest. Hauling it to campus means it can also help fuel a favorite CSU tradition. ๐

Colorado's forests provide so much: clean water, places to explore, thriving communities, livelihoods, wildlife and memories we hope to pass on. September is prime time to collect the edible seeds of our ๐ง๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ต: the piรฑon pine (๐๐ช๐ฏ๐ถ๐ด ๐ฆ๐ฅ๐ถ๐ญ๐ช๐ด). Piรฑon nuts have a rich, buttery flavor, but you may have never tasted Colorado-grown piรฑon nuts because theyโre rarely sold in stores.
Piรฑon pines are a โmastingโ species, producing large crops only once every 3โ7 years, and harvests vary by region. In Colorado, piรฑon pines grow in dry, lower-elevation woodlands across much of the Western Slope and south of Colorado Springs along the Front Range. The northernmost stand is just north of Fort Collins along Highway 287 at Owl Canyon.
Planning to harvest? Please leave some nuts for wildlife, future trees and other foragers, and check the harvest rules of the land management agency you're visiting.
