Did you know that marigold flowers are known for their ability to function as companion plants? 🌼 By planting them near crop plants like tomatoes and squash, they can reduce pest pressure on the primary crop being grown. Anna Kohl's internship focuses on this exact topic!

Anna is a senior studying horticulture with a focus on controlled environment and agricultural biology, and her internship, "Evaluating the Benefits of Companion Plantings Using Edible Flower Species" focuses on understanding how growing marigolds and edible flowers with crop plants impacts the yields of the flowers and crops compared to a monoculture system. 📈🌾

1. Anna plants the last of nine sections of the zucchini and marigold intercropping trials at Dandelion Farms. Each row has a marigold monoculture, zucchini monoculture, and a zucchini intercropped with marigold plants.

2. From left to right: Makenzie Lee (a previous Extension intern on this topic!), mentor Chad Miller, and Anna at Dandelion Farms. They checked on the site, weeded the three intercropping experimental beds, and installed frost cloth on the row cover hoops. Anna says, "It was special to me to have both of my mentors out with me on-site."

4. Anna at the Gifford Building in Dr. Van Buiten's laboratory. She's using a multichannel pipette to deliver 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) into a well plate as part of an assay to measure antioxidant capacity of edible flowers.

5. The inside of one of the low-tunnels after the frost cloth was first installed. The zucchinis and marigolds had been planted for about three weeks at this point.

6. Anna prepares edible flower samples of vortex mixed with methanol to create a homogenous solution prior to 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and the Folin–Ciocâlteu (FC) assays.

Saira Hafeez is earning her Ph.D. in Political Science and Environmental Policy and is spending her summer in Grand County for a community wildfire preparedness internship! ⛰️

As part of her work, Saira is getting a hands-on introduction to wildfire science, community risk reduction, and collaborative mitigation planning within Grand County. Saira is also contributing to the countywide wildfire risk assessment program, where she's gaining practical experience evaluating both home-level and broader community wildfire vulnerabilities. In doing so, she's understanding the factors that shape local fire risk and the tools used to assess and reduce it. 🪵🧯

So far, Saira has participated in multiple Community Chipping Day events with the Grand County Wildfire Council team, taken a field trip to know more about firefighters' work and procedures, and attended the Grand County Government's Economic Summit. Nice work, Saira!
