Waymo is in Denver now, but that doesn’t mean you can call one from anywhere in the city yet.

The September 1 launch is still a gradual rollout. Waymo says tens of thousands of people in each of its newest cities have already signed up, but access is being opened to riders over time.

The initial Denver service area covers roughly 60 square miles, including downtown, RiNo, Capitol Hill, Cherry Creek, Central Park and the city’s major sports venues.

For now, there are two pretty big limitations: Waymo is not operating on Denver freeways yet, and you can’t take one to DIA. Airport service is expected to require more highway testing first.

Denver is also one of the more interesting tests for the technology because of winter weather. The newer Ojai vehicles being used here run Waymo’s sixth-generation autonomous driving system and include heated sensors and technology designed to keep operating in snow and ice.

Waymo says its system can detect reduced traction and adjust its speed, acceleration and braking accordingly. The vehicles can also share weather and road-condition information with the rest of the local fleet.

So this launch is really the beginning of the Denver experiment, not the finished version of it.

Japan is the strangest case. It was never a British colony, but British engineers built its first railways in the 1870s and imported left-side operation, which locked in left-hand driving by 1924. When the US occupied Okinawa after WWII, that island switched to the right, then switched back to the left in 1978 once Japan regained control. One country, two flips.

Sweden's 1967 switch, known as "Dagen H," happened at exactly 5am on September 3rd, when the entire country crossed to the other side of the road at once. Oddly, the death toll that year actually dropped, from 1,313 fatalities in 1965 to 1,077 in 1967, because everyone drove more cautiously right after the change. That caution wore off within a couple of years.
