It’s a tough year to be a bear in Colorado. With drought limiting natural food sources like berries and acorns, bears are taking greater risks to find food just as they enter hyperphagia, when they must consume 20,000 calories a day to prepare for winter hibernation.

The result? A dramatic increase in human-bear interactions which can lead to conflicts. has reported 294 bears euthanized through August 31 this year, compared with 83 at the same time last year.

What can you do?
Be BearWise*! As we head into fall, securing trash, bird feeders, fruit, compost, and other attractants is more important than ever.

🐻 Use bear-resistant trash and recycling containers.
🐻 Use electric fencing around chickens, beehives, gardens, orchards, and compost.
🐻 Put bird feeders away at night.
🐻 Pick up fallen fruit from the ground.

Keeping bears from finding an easy meal near your home can help prevent them from becoming food-conditioned and ultimately protect both bears and people.

*BearWise is a program of the that supports people and communities in implementing solutions that work for human-bear coexistence. Our team is also working to respond to those situations.
