There's a medium chance the next tropical system develops this week (next name is Fay), but a zero chance of it impacting Florida or the US.

Edouard is a classic example of why you should never base your decisions or preparations solely on the category of a storm.

The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale only measures wind speed. It does not account for rainfall, flooding, storm surge, tornadoes or other hazards.

Edouard made landfall as a tropical storm, and 24 hours later it’s still hanging on as a tropical depression while dumping nearly 20 inches of rain across parts of Southeast Texas.

And 20 inches of rain in 24 hours is going to cause serious problems whether you live in a designated flood zone or not.

The category doesn’t tell the whole story. Always prepare for the hazards the storm is actually capable of producing, not just the number on the map.

Edouard has weakened to a tropical depression, but continues to bring heavy rain to southeast Texas overnight.

TD 5 has been upgraded to Tropical Storm Edouard. Some additional strengthening is possible overnight before Edouard makes landfall Tuesday in Southeast Texas. Once it moves inland, Edouard will rapidly weaken.

The main concern will be heavy rain and the potential for localized flooding across parts of Southeast Texas.
