Winter is here. 🥶

In the American SW, Piñon Pine has long been prized for its life giving, skin nourishing properties. The indigenous tribes infused the resin in tallow, and kept the balm close during the winter months. Not only is it a premier emollient for chapped, wind swept skin, it also excels as a respiratory support for excess mucus and deep coughs.

I made a fresh batch today, with grassfed tallow. It’s been whipped a bit to incorporate the two oils and a smidge of beeswax. It’s ready to protect hands, feet, and whatever you give to it. 🤍

It’s the Solstice today, a time when our diminished light brings our immune systems challenge to adapt and hold steady.

In times I waver, I use this medicine, Throat Coat.

I use this formula to soothe a hot, angry throat. Wildcrafted with plants from the Midwest like violet and plantain leaf to soothe the hot, the scratchy.

I brought in some star players for immunity from the SW mountains like Yerba del Lobo and fresh Osha root. Wildcrafted elderberry from here in Indiana, garden sage, and local bee propolis and honey.

Violets. Their cooling properties abound, their earthy sweetness, magnetic. For me, violets represent understated regality unparalleled in their ability to cool, soothe, and gently move water. They are a steady plant, showing us our own capacity to Stay when things are hot. Violets give up their flower when it’s scorching hot, and keep steadily on through the intense summer heat. They then throw a second flower in the late fall, keeping this second flower close to the ground, hidden from the sun’s rays.

In this way, we can also receive Violet’s medicine by meditating on what is Hidden.

Do we keep heat/anger hidden in the body as a way to hold fast to the past? Do we keep heat hidden only to shore up water because we are afraid to allow it move, circulate? Can we flower/make our love anew when the heat of an open wound causes us to wilt/bleed?

Plants create Movement.

When selecting plants for a blend, consideration for the type of movement wanted is where I begin.

This blend I named “Clarity” with “Reset” in the title. It could have easily been called “Grief” or “Shock” but I like to name things based on where we’re going—not where we’ve been. Why keep calling the Heavy into the room if it’s not required? We only require the awareness of where we want to go in order to receive the Medicine.

Today I received a text from someone who used blend and she did just that—she used the blend in a moment of Uncertainty. Her nervous system had her flush with hives, shortness of breath.

She reported by the time she had arrived to work, she was back down and in her body, nervous system reset, and! No hives. 🤗

Stories like these keep me going. They help me appreciate our interconnectedness, the way the Medicine gets inside and holds us close to one another, to the inner Self. 💚
