Mac’s first winter at the Fort Wayne Zoo lies just around the corner! 🦒❄️ The reticulated giraffes in our care tuck themselves away in their warm barn with lots of enrichment opportunities throughout the colder months, thanks to your generous support.

Mac’s Animal Care Team is working diligently to ensure the giraffes have lots to do over the winter, and you can help, too! Today, October 6th, and tomorrow, October 7th are the last Amazon Prime Days of the year. Giraffe Platform was filled with squeals, giggles, and awe as we unveiled the giraffe calf's name this morning! Say hello to Mac. 👋

The giraffe naming opportunity was a live auction item at the Zoo’s annual Zoobilee event held September 17.

The Atkins family chose the name Mac after their beloved dog, whose impact not only touched their family, but has now supported the lives of over 1,500 animals and inspired others to care as well.

We are thankful to the Allen County Health Department for their attentiveness and expertise. The safety of our animals, guests, staff, and volunteers is incredibly important, and we will continue to follow the lead of the ACHD as we strive to provide a healthy and safe experience for everyone.

As the number of measles cases in Indiana continue to climb, the Allen County Department of Health again urges everyone to check their immunization status and get themselves and family members vaccinated.

As vaccination rates wane and measles continues to circulate in Indiana and across the U.S., exposure to the virus will become more likely. Be on alert, check your vaccination status and ensure that you and your loved ones are protected.

Nicknamed “The Queen of Fort Wayne”, Ina has connected with over 10 million guests since she arrived at the Fort Wayne Zoo in 2008, and her reign has been one of connection, inspiration, and education. 👇

The only lioness the Fort Wayne Zoo has ever had is diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. I talked with the zoo's veterinarian and Ina's keeper about how her medical behavior training has been crucial for her care.

At 19 years old, Ina has far surpassed the average 15-year lifespan of her wild counterparts. Nicknamed “The Queen of Fort Wayne”, her highness has connected with over 10,270,120 guests since her arrival to the Fort Wayne Zoo in 2008, and her reign has been one of connection, inspiration, and education.

Considered a geriatric lion, Ina has increased health care needs. Through years of voluntary training, in June 2025, the Zoo’s Animal Health Team was able to diagnose Ina with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).

CKD is a progressive condition that affects the kidneys’ ability to filter toxins and conserve water. The kidneys have a certain number of nephrons, which are filtering units, and their job is secretion and filtration to eliminate toxins and conserve water. There are a finite number of nephrons, and once they are damaged, the disease will continue to progress further.

The Zoo is grateful to its members, volunteers, donors, and guests whose continued support helps provide the specialized care Ina receives. Visit FWZoo.com to see the full story about Ina’s changing care. Learn from her Animal Care and Animal Health Teams, who have played a pivotal role in her training and specialized care.
