Scammers are getting more convincing.

Be cautious of emails, texts, or calls claiming you have a tax refund waiting or that you owe taxes immediately.

According to the IRS, scammers often pretend to be the IRS to steal personal and financial information.

Common red flags include:

- Threats or urgent payment demands
- Requests for gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency
- Suspicious links asking for personal information
- Unexpected messages about tax refunds or tax credits

The IRS generally does not initiate contact by email, text message, or social media to request sensitive information.

If you receive a suspicious IRS related email, report phishing emails to [email protected] and report tax scams through IRS.gov.
