Tourism and destination development are not the same thing.

But in many communities, they get bundled together as if they are.

Tourism is the customer-facing side — marketing, advertising, visitor information, events, and promotion.

Destination development is everything happening behind the scenes that shapes the actual visitor experience once someone arrives.

Walkability. Retail. Restaurants. Atmosphere. Public spaces. Trails. Lodging. Identity. Experiences.

Marketing may convince someone to visit once.

Destination development is what convinces them to come back.

I wrote a new article exploring why understanding this distinction matters more than ever for small towns trying to strengthen tourism economies and create memorable visitor experiences.

Tourism is more than social media posts, brochures, and events.

What if Warren County and Front Royal approached tourism as true destination development instead of just marketing?

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how Front Royal and Warren County could work together in a way that strengthens tourism, supports local businesses, grows lodging, improves visitor experiences, and turns first-time visitors into repeat visitors.

In this new blog post, I break down:
• Why tourism marketing and destination development are not the same thing
• Why the Town and County should play different but complementary roles
• How dashboards, data, QR code visitor experiences, and short-term rental partnerships could help grow tourism long-term
• Why the visitor experience after arrival matters just as much as getting people here in the first place

One example:
If every Airbnb, cabin rental, campground, and hotel in Warren County had digital visitor experiences and local “coupon books” through QR codes… who would own and manage that initiative today?

Right now, probably nobody.

That’s the gap destination development fills.

The future of small retail isn’t about having the biggest inventory anymore.

It’s about creating experiences people actually remember.

Over the past few years, I’ve watched travelers and shoppers shift away from generic stores filled with random products and toward places that feel authentic, connected, and memorable. Places that tell a story.

I wrote a new article about why I believe the “generic gift shop” model is slowly disappearing — and why storytelling, photography, local identity, and emotional connection are becoming the future of tourism retail.

If you care about small business, tourism, retail, downtowns, or creating places people want to return to, I’d love for you to read it.

Communities across America are increasingly pushing back against new data centers.

At the same time, demand for AI, cloud computing, and digital services continues to surge.

So what happens when society says "no" to the infrastructure technology needs?

History suggests technology rarely stops. It adapts.

From floating offshore facilities to nuclear-powered campuses and even orbital data centers, the industry may already be engineering around the problem.

Could today's data centers look obsolete sooner than we think?

Why the Best Photo Wasn't the Sunset

One of the biggest mistakes photographers make is becoming so focused on the sunset itself that they miss everything happening around them.

This image, Sunset at Hogback, was taken during one of my Shenandoah National Park photography workshops at Hogback Overlook along Skyline Drive. While everyone was waiting for the sun to drop below the horizon, I turned around and noticed the mountains glowing in beautiful golden light beneath dramatic storm clouds.

Within minutes, tripods were turning and cameras were pointing in the opposite direction.

The best photo of the evening wasn't the sunset at all.

In this new Behind the Lens article, I share:
📸 The story behind the image
📷 Camera settings and gear used
🏔️ Photography tips from Hogback Overlook
🌤️ Why changing weather creates better landscape photos

One of the biggest forces quietly reshaping small towns today is not tourism, taxes, or even population growth.

It’s convenience.

Online shopping.
Same-day delivery.
Drive-thrus.
Streaming entertainment.
Instant information.
One-click ordering.

The modern convenience economy has fundamentally changed how people spend money, where they spend time, and how communities survive economically.

I wrote a deeper breakdown on how this shift is impacting small towns, downtowns, tourism, and local businesses — and why experience and authenticity may actually matter more now than ever before.

How to Build a Tourism Funnel for Small Town Growth — Scott Turnmeyer | Creative Strategy & Photography 05/21/2026

Most communities think tourism starts when someone arrives.

In reality, tourism starts long before that.

It starts with:

search results
social media
travel inspiration
destination branding
blogs
videos
photography
and the overall digital experience people encounter before they ever decide to visit.

That’s what a tourism funnel really is.

I wrote a breakdown of how communities can build stronger tourism funnels that actually attract visitors, increase overnight stays, and create long-term economic impact.

There are not many places left where the night sky still feels truly dark.

The kind of dark where the Milky Way stretches overhead and the world suddenly feels quiet again.
