Buyers are Being Watched at Showings and it's Costing Deals

A new LendingTree survey found that cameras and recording devices have become common during home showings, with nearly three-quarters of recent buyers reporting they noticed surveillance. The survey found that 19% of buyers left a showing because of recording devices, while 18% decided not to make an offer. Many buyers also said they changed their behavior during showings, avoiding discussions about budgets, offer strategies, or their opinions of a property.

The report suggests that visible surveillance may affect both buyer comfort and negotiations. Analysts advise agents to remind clients to assume they may be recorded during showings and to save discussions about pricing or strategy until after they leave the property

More Young Adults Live with Parents as Housing Costs Rise

The total number of adults under 35 who live with their parents has hit a new record of 25.2 million as rising housing costs continue to present barriers to homeownership for many young Americans, according to a new Realtor.com report.

Though largely educated and employed, these young adults are still stymied by a lack of affordability, Realtor.com Senior Economist Hannah Jones said.

"What's holding them back isn't a lack of qualifications, but rather, at least in part, a lack of housing they can actually afford," Jones said in the report. "This is a supply story, not an employment story."

Far More Real Estate Agents Now Report Seeing Balanced Market

After several years of a lean and pricey housing market, real estate agents are starting to see more balance. In the second quarter of the year, 44% of real estate agents surveyed in CNBC’s Housing Market Survey said they were seeing a balanced market between buyer and seller. That share is up from 30% in the third quarter of last year, when CNBC began its quarterly survey.

The CNBC Housing Market Survey is a national inquiry of real estate agents selected randomly across the United States. Responses for the second-quarter survey were collected between June 23 and June 30. This quarter, 53 agents shared their insights.

Sellers appear to be getting more realistic when pricing their homes, not expecting the huge jumps seen in the first two years of the pandemic.

California Sues 5 Cities Over Failure to Comply With State Housing Law

California is suing five cities for repeatedly failing to plan for their share of housing, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday.

Attorney General Rob Bonta and the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) filed actions against Calexico, Costa Mesa, Half Moon Bay, Ridgecrest and Turlock, accusing each of violating California’s Housing Element Law.

Under the law, every city and county must update its housing plan every eight years to meet its Regional Housing Needs Allocation, or its share of the regional and statewide housing needs, according to a news release from Bonta’s office.

Senior Housing Wealth Reaches Record Level in First Quarter

Housing wealth among homeowners age 62 and older rebounded to a record $14.92 trillion in the first quarter of 2026 after declining in the previous two quarters, according to the latest National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association (NRMLA) – RiskSpan Reverse Mortgage Market Index.

The quarterly index, which has tracked senior home values and home equity trends since 2000, found that the increase was driven by rising home values and relatively modest growth in mortgage debt.

Senior housing wealth increased by an estimated $314.8 billion, or 1.8%, during the quarter. That gain was partially offset by a $10.5 billion, or 0.4%, increase in mortgage debt held by homeowners age 62 and older.
