Rooted Revival

I think about all the versions of me that almost quit before anyone was watching.

The version who posted to twelve followers and felt embarrassed hitting share. The version who compared her four views to someone else’s four hundred thousand and wondered if she was fooling herself. The version who kept a business running out of a phone in the dark while her kids slept, with absolutely no evidence yet that any of it would matter.

Nobody claps for that version. There’s no reel of the year you almost gave up. No highlight reel for the version of you deciding, again, quietly, to keep going anyway.

But that’s the version who actually built the thing.

Not the one who finally got the big number. The one who kept showing up before there was any reason to believe she should.

If that’s you right now, I need you to know something. The invisible years aren’t wasted years. They’re the ones doing all the actual work. The visible part just gets to take the credit later.

You’re not late. You’re not behind. You’re in the part of the story that makes the rest of it true.

We didn’t plan to go to the beach for the Fourth.

It was completely impromptu. And somehow we ended up staying long enough to catch the fireworks. I was sitting there with my two young sons, watching their faces light up with every burst in the sky, and the whole crowd around us started chanting USA. I didn’t expect it to hit me the way it did. You don’t get to control most of what happens to you. Not the weather, not the crowd, not whether a moment turns into something you’ll remember forever or just another Tuesday. But you can control whether you show up for it. Whether you put your phone down and actually watch your kids’ faces instead of the fireworks. What we choose to put out into our children, what we choose to do with the time we’re actually given — that part is always ours.
