July is National Pet Hydration Awareness Month! Did you know the general guide is that a healthy cat or dog should drink 1 ounce of water per 1 pound of body weight a day? So if your pet weighs 10 lb they should drink about 10 oz of water a day (*general guidance*).

๐Ÿ’ง**How To Keep Your Pet Hydrated:**
*Provide fresh water: Wash water bowls daily and keep fresh, cool water accessible at all times.

*Supplement their diet: Increase their water intake by adding can food to their diet; mixing water directly into their meals; or giving watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon as treats (they're safe to eat, and tasty!)

*Offer frozen treats: Give them ice cubes, frozen fruit (see above), or specially made frozen pet broths.

*Provide multiple water sources: Place bowls in different areas of your home, and consider a pet water fountain to entice them to drink.

โš ๏ธ**Signs to Look for:**
If you notice any of the following signs give us or any vet a call right away:
*Loss of skin elasticity: Gently pinch and slightly raise the skin between their shoulder blades; if it doesn't bounce back instantly, it is a sign of dehydration.

*Dry and sticky gums: Healthy gums should be pink and wet

*Sunken or dry-looking eyes

*Excessive panting

*Lethargy

*Diarrhea

*Loss of appetite or vomiting

We hope these tips help keep your pet cool and healthy! ๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿพ๐Ÿˆ

โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿพ **SUMMER PET SAFETY CHECKLIST** ๐Ÿพโ˜€๏ธ

It's officially summer! And it's HOT! We wanted to share some quick tips to help keep your pet safe:

๐Ÿ”ฅ **The 5-Second Paw Test:**
If you can't comfortably hold your hand on the pavement, sand, etc for 5 seconds, it's too hot for a walk! Stick to early morning or late evening walks.

๐Ÿš— **Car Danger:**
Even on an 85ยฐF day with the windows cracked, the inside of a car can rocket to over 100ยฐF in less than 10 minutes. Leave them home in the A/C instead!

๐Ÿ**Watch Out for Snakes:**
Keep the grass short and your yard free of as much brush and other hiding places as you can. Snakes are more active in the early morning and late evening hours- so while that's the best time for a walk temperature-wise, be on the lookout for snakes!

๐ŸŽ†**Prepare for Fireworks:**
Be prepared for lots of fireworks not only on July 4th but the days around it. Make sure your pets are securely inside, especially if they're afraid of loud noises. Write your name and number on their collar with a permanent maker just in case they escape.

๐Ÿ” **Keep the Grill Out of Reach:** Charcoal, matches, and citronella are toxic. Plus, fatty BBQ scraps, onions, and cooked bones can cause severe stomach upset or blockages. Give them pet-safe treats instead!

๐ŸชŸ **Check Your Screens:**
Love letting the summer breeze in? Make sure your window screens are tightly secured. Curious cats (and dogs!) can easily push through loose screens.

๐ŸŒŠ **Fresh Water, Everywhere:** Always carry a portable water bowl on outings, and keep multiple water dishes fresh and full at home.

๐ŸฆŸ **Don't Skip the Doses:** Mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks thrive in the summer. A single missed month of heartworm or flea/tick preventative can lead to a major health headache. Ensure they are fully protected!
