Recap of June 11, 2026 Council Meeting
1) Southwestern 560 Project of City Customer Service Center – Council received an update on the customer service center we are building in Southwestern’s new development adjoining its campus. As the anchor tenant to phase one of the development, the City hopes to be the catalyst to a project that could transform our community and provide the revenue to help sustain Southwestern in perpetuity. The renderings for the building look amazing, and it’s great to see how efficient the design is while still providing room for us to grow in the future. Most importantly, by providing a central location for all of the departments that provide services to the community, we can make things easier on our citizens as they interact with the City.
2) Perky Beans – Council approved an application for a new business on University near St. Helen’s Catholic Church. The business is primarily a coffee shop, but they’ll also function as a café with beer, wine, and coffee-based cocktails. Folks have asked for more options on the east side of town for years now, so it’s great to see more activity in this area.

Austin suburb secures No. 1 ranking as safest midsize city in Texas As the greater Austin area continues to grow with an influx of new residents, two popular northern suburbs are leading the nation with balancing the trifecta of affordability, opportunity, and safety.

Georgetown City Council hosted a special-called meeting Monday with the Unified Development Code Steering Committee, Unified Development Code Advisory Committee, and the Planning and Zoning Commission.

During the meeting, the council discussed…
📝 Recent draft changes to the Unified Development Code update since the first joint session, including:
--updates to graphics and maps in the code to create uniformity
--the incorporation of neighborhood conservation overlay district language for the San Jose and Track-Ridge-Grasshopper neighborhoods

🙋 Heard feedback from members of the Planning & Zoning Commission, Unified Development Code Steering Committee, and Unified Development Code Advisory Committee about tree ordinance and temporary signage requirements, as well as extraterritorial jurisdiction plan reviews

📝 Proposed future updates to the UDC to be considered after adoption:
--Creating a citywide mixed-use district zoning
--Increasing xeriscaping options for landscape requirements
--Revisiting road width requirements throughout the City
--Requiring noise studies for developments adjacent to high-speed roads to implement appropriate sound barriers
--Refining Chapter 5 of the code to work in conjunction with the design guidelines of Old Town and Downtown and the Downtown Master Plan

Recap of May 26, 2026 Council Meeting
1) 9th & Main Parking Garage – We will be partnering with the Texas Municipal League on a new parking garage on the block at 9th & Main downtown. TML is renovating the old Georgetonian Building, and because they bring in lots of people for trainings and conferences, they need additional parking to make their site work better. TML will take the lead on designing and building the facility, which will make it much cheaper for us as taxpayers, but we will ultimately end up with lots a great additional parking downtown.
2) Woodside MUD Request – The developers of Woodside and Pulte asked to bring additional land into the development and for it to be fully age-restricted like Sun City. While the rest of the MUD request received Council support, several council members expressed concerns over adding more age-restricted housing because of the possible constraints it places on our budgets when the property tax values are frozen. This is a critical debate for us, especially as the legislature meets next session and continues to cut away at property taxes, which is a key source of our revenue by which we can provide the services our community demands.

The City’s Legislative Task Force has begun meeting to develop the City’s legislative agenda for the upcoming 2027 Texas Legislative Session that will begin in January. 📜

The task force is made up of 15 Georgetown residents appointed by City Council who will meet six times this summer. Members of the task force will help create the legislative agenda, which outlines the policies and legislation the City will support or oppose during the upcoming legislative session. 📝

During its meetings, the task force will hear from the following departments:
-Downtown and Tourism
-Economic Development
-Planning
-Electric and Water utilities
-Transportation
-Library
-Police, Fire, and Emergency Management
-Finance

Preliminary rendering of the proposed next downtown parking garage.

The City Council will discuss construction of the next parking garage downtown at our next meeting. This one will be at 9th & Main across from the Tax Assessor & Collector’s office. This garage would have retail wrapped around a portion of the garage and cost would be shared with the Texas Municipal League.

Changes to Georgetown’s building code aim to make development more accessible This summer, Georgetown’s Unified Development Code — which sets standards and building codes for landowners and developers — will get a major update for the first time since 2003.
